Born into a poor family in Maceió (capital of Alagoas, Northeast Brazil), Djavan formed the group Luz, Som, Dimensão (LSD - "Light, Sound, Dimension"), playing Beatles covers. In 1973 Djavan moved to Rio de Janeiro and started singing in local nightclubs. After competing in several festivals he gained attention and recorded the album A Voz, o Violão e a Arte de Djavan in 1976. The album included the song "Flor de Lis" which became one of his most memorable hits. Albums that followed included his other musical influence, African music, and additional hits followed like "Açaí", "Sina" and "Samurai", which featured Stevie Wonder's harmonica. His best known compositions are: "Meu Bem Querer", "Oceano", "Faltando um Pedaço", "Esquinas", "Seduzir", "Pétala", "Lilás", "A Ilha", "Fato Consumado", "Álibi", "Azul" and "Serrado".

Rei do Mar
Djavan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
No azul verde do mar
Junto da manhã
Em busca da vida
Vou remover
Lendas, tormentas, paixão
Livre a navegar
Que me importa
A brisa fria
O brilho dos faróis
Que me importa
O fundo, a calmaria e o temporal
Eu sou o rei
Eu sou o rei
Eu sou o rei
do mar
Da minha cidade natal
The lyrics to Djavan's song Rei do Mar convey the singer's desire to lose themselves in the vast expanse of the ocean, setting out alongside the morning in search of life. The singer declares their intention to remove any obstacles, including legends, storms, and passions, so they can be free to sail unencumbered in search of life. The singer declares that no matter the cold breeze or the brightness of the lighthouse, it does not matter, as they are the king of the sea, the master of their hometown.
The song Rei do Mar exudes a sense of freedom and a desire for adventure. The lyrics speak to the theme of self-discovery as the singer set out in search of life, unencumbered by any obstacles. Djavan's use of metaphor to describe the vast ocean and the singer's journey to become the king of the sea serves to make the song both introspective and otherworldly.
