Something
Doa Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Something
Something

Something
Something

Something
Something

Overall Meaning

The Japanese lyrics to Doa's song "Something" express a sense of longing and incompleteness despite beautiful surroundings. The singer describes a Sunday morning with a perfect blue sky and yet "something" is missing. They accelerate towards the ocean, yearning for more, but still feel unfulfilled. The song recalls a time when the singer and someone else dreamed of a shining world that has since disappeared like a mirage. Even though the singer understands what that person had given them, they cannot express it in words and love remains unspoken.

The song continues with imagery of overflowing waves and the difficulty people have in really absorbing each other's presence. The love that the singer desires remains out of reach and unfulfilled, despite their awareness of what they are searching for. The lyrics end on a note of hope, however, with a promise that summer is coming, and with it the possibility of new love.

Overall, "Something" expresses a search for meaning and connection in life, and the difficulty of finding and expressing that connection, even when it is understood on a deeper level.

SECOND OF MY THREE FAVORITE CANADIAN PUNK BANDS HONORING CANADA DAY ON JULY 1 IT'S THE FAMOUS SOMETHING BETTER CHANGE BY D.O.A.
The band formed in Burnaby British Columbia, ten miles from downtown Vancouver. Seems Vancouver was the birthplace of Canadian hardcore, possibly due to its proximity to Seattle and Portland. D.O.A. is the most famous Canadian punk band and due to its tireless touring, has a worldwide following. The band released a single and two e.p.'s and then their debut album, Something Better Change in 1980.
The lineup of leader Joey "Shithead" Keithley vocals/guitar, Dave Gregg guitar, Randy Rampage bass and Chuck Biscuits drums is famous for their amazing, energetic live shows. I mean, with names like these, don't you just know this is gonna be good?
All time great punk/hardcore album.

One of the best punk rock records of the early eighties and proof that punk in 1981 was not just London, L.A., and New York. Oh Canaduh!!!

Brewzerr

Only the critics said that shit. Anyone who was around back then that thought there was no scene in Vancouver obviously wasn't paying attention.

Pogopope

who ever said it was ONLY london, LA and ny? they are ignorant.

fucu

absolutely agreed

I remember getting this in the mail. I lived in a rural No. Cal. town and was the only punk.
Still have it.

One of the most perfect punk records ever made... both this and it's equally amazing follow-up - Hardcore 81. The line-up that played on those two albums (Shithead, Rampage, Gregg, Biscuits) was by far the best line-up DOA ever had. In fact it was one of the greatest punk line-ups ANY band ever had. They were fucking unstoppable at the time. To me, those two albums have always been the best example of what pure, unadulterated punk sounds like. Blew me away 40 years ago and still gets me adrenalized today as a 50-something year old with health issues. RIP to all the past members we've lost through the years - Randy Rampage, Dave Gregg, Brian Goble, Dimwit, Simon Wilde, and Ken Jensen.

@Brewzerr Is there any full length videos of this tour anywhere?

Brewzerr

@davidon2 That tour was the first time I ever saw them, at the Island in Houston. Really Red opened. Perhaps it would be redundant to say I was blown away, but the truth is I was. Definitely one of the top 5 greatest gigs I've ever seen in my entire life. Biscuits was just a blur the whole time, Rampage jumped so high he almost hit his head on the ceiling, Dave Gregg did his hilarious spaz dance on every song, and Shithead had that trademark "Paul McCartney on meth" head-bob from hell going full throttle the whole way through their set. I saw them again many more times over the years, but that was the only time I saw them with the 'classic' line-up. They were always good, but never as good as the first time.

My one regret not seeing the HC81 tour when it came by here in DC Mar 1981. Was unaware of it!!

davidon2

Not a clunker among the 2
