From the first note he has allowed God to elevate him higher and higher. And it is evident by not only through the songs that he sings, but the words that he conveys to the people of God on every stage. It is truly What a Wonder the Lord has Done to him, through him and for him. An intricate part of Doc McKenzie’s music ministry down through the years on his musical journey has been the forming of the Hi-Lites.
The Hi-Lites have been through many transitions of background vocalists as well as musicians. But now God has put in place whom he wanted to be in place. Today we have as the Hi-Lites: Darryl Henley, Rodney “Roc” Dickerson, Darryl started at age 11.
Darryl stayed Robert Holland and Dennis Millerfor 18 years before going into the ministry. Darryl later returned in 1999/2000 and has not looked back. Rodney’s presence as point man for background vocals and choreography is one that is in a class by itself. Rodney has the unique distinction of being an all around gifted vocalist. He projects energy that invigorates the crowd. His captivating, and almost always, spontaneous smile will melt the coldest hearts.
The Roc left for a short time and has now returned as a vocalist. Robert started with The Hi-Lites in 2001. He left for a short time to pursue other endeavors. We are happy to have him back in the Hi-Lites family. Dennis is no stranger to the Hi-Lites. He has sung with The Hi-Lites on numerous occasions filling in when needed down through the years. And now after pursuing other musical endeavors, he takes his place as one of The Hi-Lites.
Since their conception, Doc McKenzie and the Hi-Lites have been in the center of the hearts of many that love Gospel Quartet Music. They have proven that they are determined to do Gods’ will where ever he wants them to go. And now, they are proclaiming that it is their time and their turn to get everything that they have earned.
They have stood the test of time, through good days and bad days, they still lift their voices, hearts and souls and profess that we really do serve a Good God. And because he’s been so good to them, they Won’t Complain. Doc McKenzie and the Hi-Lites have obtained many professional accomplishments including several releases, numerous nominations for awards and the opportunity to participate in many special events all across the country, but their greatest reward is knowing that God is and continues to be blessed by what they do.
They still travel extensively offering their best Praise unto God. They are not a group that just sing, but they worship!! And because of their desire to worship, it commands those in their presence to do the same. It is true that if you wait, trust and have faith God will not just give you what you want, but he will give you what you need, when you need it. We bless God for an awesome musical staff: Ray Spann, Mick Alston and Ceddrick Cooper. One of the most talented sound technicians: Bryan McKenzie as well as a faithful ministry assistant: Stephanie F. Smith.
No one ever said that the journey would be easy, but Doc McKenzie and the Hi-Lites wouldn’t trade it all for nothing in the world! For through it all, they can still say, they still have joy. For what didn’t kill them has surely made them stronger. If they are ever in your area make sure that you are there for a worship experience of a lifetime. One thing is for sure that once you hear them, you won't leave there the same. Your spirit will be edified, God will be glorified and the devil will surely be terrified!

The lyrics to "Yes I'm Going" by Doc Mckenzie & The Hi-Lites convey a confident declaration of individuality and success, while also touching on the themes of loyalty, betrayal, and the harsh realities of life in a competitive environment. The opening lines mention the acquisition of wealth, showcasing an unapologetic attitude toward financial success. The repeated phrases emphasize a carefree lifestyle, adopting a sense of freedom that comes from financial independence. The singer openly challenges the listener by asserting their authenticity and questioning the motivations of others, suggesting that they are not concerned about the perceptions of those who may envy or misunderstand them.
As the song progresses, it becomes evident that the singer is grappling with the complexities of relationships, particularly the fickleness of friendships and romantic interests. The mention of "acting shady" and "crazy" highlights the duality of trust and betrayal that often exists in social circles. However, amidst this chaos, the singer expresses gratitude for a significant other's support, showcasing a sense of loyalty that contrasts with the negativity surrounding them. This duality captures the essence of contemporary life where affirmations of love and loyalty coexist with an awareness of betrayal, creating a layered narrative that resonates with listeners familiar with such complexities.
A vivid portrayal of lifestyle elements comes through in the lyrics—references to "gold in my mouth," "Mosh pit," and "rolling" evoke an image of vibrant social gatherings marked by extravagance. These symbols serve to reinforce the sense of empowerment that comes with financial success and personal enjoyment of life. There's also an assertion of creativity and artistry in the line about making "a bop," indicating that the singer is not just chasing money but also striving to make an impactful statement through their music. This creativity, paired with the pressures of maintaining a specific image, adds an additional layer to the narrative, demonstrating the balance between external expectations and personal fulfillment.
Finally, the concluding lines reiterate the message of determination and resilience. The singer emphasizes their ongoing grind while distancing themselves from negativity and deceptive behaviors. By stating "only real around me," they draw a clear line regarding the type of relationships they value. The term "green with envy" encapsulates the competitive nature of their world, where others may not understand the struggles and efforts required to achieve success. The repeated question of identity—"Who are you?"—and the focus on their own journey speaks to a broader narrative in urban and hip-hop culture centered around self-affirmation, authenticity, and the quest for individuality against all odds. Ultimately, the song serves not only as a celebration of success but also as a reflection on the trials and tribulations faced in the pursuit of one's dreams.
