Before clicking on this video, I only knew that some German guy named Goethe (had no idea how to pronounce it) had written a big book called “Faust,” about a guy who made a deal with the devil, and that it was a big influence on Nietzsche and others.

But it was a very clear, interesting, thoughtful, engaging, and highly enjoyable listen. Thank you.

It felt like I had asked a knowledgeable friend “hey, can you tell me all about that one book ‘Faust’ that people talk about a lot, written by that ‘Goth’ guy?”

I'm seventy one years old and it was only ten years ago or so of how I treated the first real girl friend started to dawn on me in its full horror. And every year it gets more vivid. I was a callous monster long before I had the consciousness to realise it. Maybe, things are different in Germany and America but I doubt it. This video is a brilliant piece of work and I thank you for it.

Your summary and interpretion of Goethe's Faust was very enjoyable and captivating to listen to. You just provided a 30-year old German with the crucial bit of additional motivation and the necessary first interpretational framework to finally read this masterpiece. Such a play and wonderful commentary. I am very interested in Goethe and had read Young Werther and now reading through Wilhelm Meister's. I have read many excerpts of Faust and hoped to find a commentary on it before really diving in as I have hear that it is a dense and complex piece.
Your commentary is so very illuminating. And the story is so moving I cannot hold back my tears. I now have renewed passion to dive into Faust.

I feel this story perfectly describes most of man kinds condition. Always wanting, never feeling fulfillment from what we earn/achieve in life. At least not any long term fulfillment. Its a rare breed of person that can say w/ certainty that they feel either fulfillment in what they do and/or are content with their life. We are always found wanting regardless of our accomplishments.

Honestly (as a fellow german) I feel like he is greatly appreciated here. I went through the story of faust twice during school and I have never met anyone that has not at least started reading it (voluntarily or otherwise). This also applies to his other famous works, even though admittedly Faust remais his most famous.

I have to tell it .
Irish guy goes onto a site looking for a start and gets directed to a portacabin . The Subbie (boss) is English and hates Paddies and starts taking the piss , imitating his accent n' stuff and getting laughs from the others in the room .
Eventually he says , roit Paddy , can you tell me the difference between a joist and a girder ?
Paddy comes back after a think and a scratch of the chin , well , Joist wrote Ulysses and Girder wrote Faust , I'll get a start somewhere else .

I listened to an audiobook of the von Goethe version of Faust, confused because it wasn't the version I was expecting and I knew it was supposed to end with him going to hell and the opposite happens but I think he's actually a worse person in the Goethe version: like as soon as he sells his soul his first demand of Mephistopheles is to make some girl have sex with him, Mephistopheles says he can't force her because she's pious but he can be his wingman so he charms her, has her drug her mother so they can have sex, the mother dies of an overdose, the girl kills herself and instead of taking even a moment to feel bad about either death he just caused he fucks off to ancient Greece to chase after Helen of Troy, who is EIGHT, meaning Marty McFly almost banging his mom in back to the future is only the second craziest time travel exploit ive seen.
He also made little effort to resist his contract besides argue with Mephistopheles, and usually it was over whether or not he is getting his soul's worth out of the deal.
In one of the Anne Rice vampire books a character posits that von Goethe changed the ending because he was getting old and wanted to believe in redemption.

@essentialsalts I would argue that Faust is indeed a tragedy in that it's Mephistopheles who is the work's true tragic figure. He bets against God and loses. He bets against Faust and loses. And at the play's end there he stands eternally thwarted by his own irrevocable nature.

It would seem that in Goethe's metaphysics God is the Devil's devil, no? If you want to grant Mephistopheles an independent existence outside of simply being a reoccurring doubt in the mind of God then it would seem that God created him knowing that his eternal existence would, by the divine plan, be pretty much in vain. Although, this does beg the question what of the damned souls glimpsed at the end of the play? Why does God allow Mephistopheles dominion over them?

I would say, if it is to be put in one sentence, then it's about TEMPTATION through the devil. That's one of most essential motives throughout the human history of arts, myths and literature. But you're right: today people have forgotten about it, just the same as such elementar motives like innocence/lost of innocence or faith/traitors. So nobody would understand you if you start with temptation.

This channel, albeit in the public domain, due to its content, is for the few, and so, it is with the major works of art, literature and philosophy, they are not meant to be understood by the average reader.

By necessary, such knowledge would be esoteric, hermetic, because, the rarest treasures are often left untouched by a less capable generation of readership.

A good indicative for a great channel is the boundless multifariousness and multiplicity of its content, because, with constant posting, the literary and narrative devices (e.g., simile, tropes and figurative speech) would soon become trite, commonplace and hackneyed.

Whereas a charismatic, eloquent, charming, good looking face could draw the viewers by the score, a man or woman of true genius is often found as the most beautiful, nay, original, but in the faceless scribe of remarkable literature and brilliance, and such qualities could still win a more distinguished company among the kindred souls.

While I very, VERY much enjoyed your analysis on the first part of Faust, I think you rushed through Faust II a bit too much. Neglecting to mention the murder of Philemon and Baucis, and ignoring the ambiguity* of the way in which Mephistopheles "wins" the bet, to me, makes it seem like you just covered Faust II for the sake of having a more positive and optimistic ending for Faust as a whole after ending Faust I on such a grim and, sorry Nietzsche, "tragic" note.
Mind you, I absolutely understand why you did this, because covering Faust II in its entirety would be a mammoth undertaking with how indepth your commentary is. And, again, I really loved what you had to say about Faust I. I just think the way you talked about Faust II here robs that work of a lot of its nuance, and I wish you would have spent just a bit more time on it. Again: I understand why you didn't though.
That is really my only major criticism of this video, it overall makes a fantastic first impression on me, and I'll definately be coming back for more.

* There is debate how one should understand the line in which Faust fulfills the bet. According to Faust I, line 1699, the bet is that Faust needs to adress a moment saying "Verweile doch, du bist so schön!" ("Stay here, for you are fair!"), however, how exactly he does ultimately say it at the end of Faust II allows for different readings. In Faust II, line 11581 he says "Zum Augenblicke dürft' ich sagen:" ("To the moment I could say:"), which is just before he says the bet-fulfilling line in 11582. The conjuntive here makes it ambiguous: does he actually intend to say it to this moment, or does he mean that he could say it to a certain moment he currently imagines? The consequence of this would be that he is potentially trying to trick Mephistopheles, into making the devil believe that he at last won the bet - by admitting that he could say the line now, but technically not fulfilling the conditions of the bet. Though Faust continues, his last words being: "Im Vorgefühl von solchem hohen Glück / Genieß ich jetzt den höchsten Augenblick." ("In preemptive feeling of such high happiness / I now enjoy the highest moment.") This, again, can be read to mean that either the bet is fulfilled or that it isn't fulfilled - that he reached the moment he wants to last, or that he hasn't since the happiness is only a preemptive one. There is a nice amount of nuance here that I really enjoy.
But this little excurse is ultimately besides the point: as you mentioned, Mephistopheles complaints that there isn't any court where he could appeal anyway. Wether Faust's soul is rightfully his or not, doesn't matter as the soul is saved by the salvation of love. In that way, your reading in this video is consistent, despite the fact that I think you glossed over some stuff.

These are all valid criticisms. Philemon and Baucis are a major point that was missed, and I also somewhat tortured myself over leaving out the symbolism of Faust seeing both Hellen and Gretchen’s souls flying - Hellen eastward and Gretchen heavenward. I also originally included more of Mephisto’s conversations with the young student who later returns as a baccalareus. Furthermore, just an analysis of the final scene, and indeed the final lines of the scene, could have prompted another half hour of analysis.

I almost think, in light of all this, that doing a special just on part two of Faust might be something to undertake in the future. Indeed, it could be its own three hour discussion. So, I leave the possibility open. Thanks for your kind words and thanks for listening!

Here's a passage from Nietzsche's Birth of Tragedy that may help explain it:

"Our whole modern world... proposes as its ideal the theoretical man equipped with the greatest forces of knowledge, and laboring in the service of science, whose archetype and progenitor is Socrates. All our educational methods originally have this ideal in view: every other form of existence must struggle on laboriously beside it, as something tolerated, but not intended. In an almost alarming manner the cultured man was for a long time found only in the form of the scholar: even our poetical arts have been forced to evolve from scholarly imitations, and in the main effect, that of rhyme, we still recognize the origin of our poetic form from artificial experiments with a nonindigenous, really scholarly language. How unintelligible must Faust, the modern cultured man, who is in himself intelligible, have appeared to a true Greek -- Faust, storming unsatisfied through all the faculties, devoted to magic and the devil from a desire for knowledge; Faust, whom we have but to place beside Socrates for the purpose of comparison, in order to see that modern man is beginning to divine the limits of this Socratic love of knowledge."

Socrates is the "Alpha" of the theoretical approach to life. This theoretical approach - to understand the world and bind it within our intellect, to "know what secret force works behind the world and directs its course". This theoretical approach is the spirit of the Enlightenment which would erupt millennia later, after the Renaissance (re-birth) of the philosophy, art and scientific striving of antiquity within Christian Europe.

Faust is the "Omega" of the theoretical approach to life. He storms through the faculties, unsatisfied, looking for a coast on the wide oceans of knowledge, seeking a way to pierce the veil of empirical experience. Faust is the spirit of the Enlightenment hitting a wall, and discovering that happiness in the deeper sense is not found in attainment of knowledge or utility, and yet striving restlessly and futilely against this wall. Goethe, as both a classicist and a romantic, thus embodies in Faust the Enlightenment spirit coming to doubt itself, and turning instead to the mystical, to the pursuit of love, to the attainment of great experiences, to the wisdom of the ancients, and to the grand narratives of mythology.
