Fightclubbing
Doctor Flake Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You've been lying to yourself
You've been laughing with yourself
Is it true what you told me
Is it me or my body

When we dance we feel lonely
In darkness what can you see
You'll try to hold my hand, by the end

Tonight you drift and touch the sky
You dance in lies, do you realise
That it's not you

Tonight you drift and touch the sky

You dance in lies, do you realise
That it's not you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Doctor Flake's Fightclubbing seem to speak to the feeling of disconnection and loneliness that can be hidden underneath the surface of a night out. The opening lines accuse the listener of lying to themselves and laughing by themselves, calling into question whether what they have said is true. The following line, "Is it me or my body", suggests that perhaps the only connection being made is physical and not emotional.

The chorus of the song expresses the feeling of loneliness even when surrounded by others: "When we dance we feel lonely / In darkness what can you see / You'll try to hold my hand, by the end". The line "In darkness what can you see" seems to suggest that despite being surrounded by people and in a social environment, it can still feel dark and isolating. The line "You'll try to hold my hand, by the end" gives the impression that the singer is also feeling lonely and seeking connection.

The repetition of "Tonight you drift and touch the sky / You dance in lies, do you realise / That it's not you" in the latter half of the song seems to speak to losing oneself in the moment and not truly being oneself. The singer seems to be urging the listener to realize that they are not being true to themselves, and to question whether the act of going out and dancing is truly making them happy.

[trip Hop] Doctor Flake - Fightclubbing
Album: Minder Surprises (2009)
