2021 sees the 25th Anniversary of Dodgy’s best selling album, Free Peace Sweet – a fan favourite and deemed a classic album of the era, spawning hits such as ‘In A Room’, ‘If You’re Thinking Of Me’, ‘Found You’ and of course, ‘Good Enough’ The band will be dipping into this album for their festival appearances across the Summer of 2021 and intend to celebrate it’s 26th Birthday next year with a series of celebratory shows and tour.
Dodgy’s 2012 comeback album ‘Stand Upright In A Cool Place’, was a long time coming, 15 years to be precise since the double platinum selling ‘Free Peace Sweet’. From the rave reviews and many media plaudits that were heaped upon ‘Stand Upright….’ it seemed that the original line up of the band had done the impossible – to reform and make a contemporary and relevant album that surpassed their previous work. Creating a sound with “golden harmonies and echoes of CSN&Y and Fleet Foxes”, and prompting The Word magazine to say “They’ve just made the record of their career by a country mile”, The Guardian described the album as a “revelation” whilst it went on to get 4**** reviews in Mojo, Uncut, Q, The Times, The Mirror and The Express.
In 2017 Dodgy released ‘What Are We Fighting For’ on Cherry Red Records, the fifth album from the original line-up of Nigel Clark, Mathew Priest and Andy Miller to amazing reviews and was the first collection of new material since their critically acclaimed reunion album, ‘Stand Upright In A Cool Place’ in 2012. It was also the first album to feature new member Stu Thoy on bass and also featured the incredible Vanessa Wilson-Best from Ultrasound.
Gigs and festival appearances have always been a crucial part of the Dodgy experience, for many they are the perfect festival band. The band have performed at most festivals worth their salt, such as Bestival, Isle of Wight, Camp Bestival, V Festival, Glastonbury, Reading, Beautiful Days, Hyde Park, Kendal Calling and many more across the UK and Europe.rtially helped fund the recording sessions.

Grassman
Dodgy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I would kill for you
and let me choose the man who is the sacrifice
shout and groan and cry and bite make me forget my pain
scratch my back and pull my hair make me forget my name
I am the grassman
put me where you choose
I will burn for you
come the storms that try to doubt us
we won't feel the rage
unless the world is worthless now
I see my fate
darling you are my heroin the everything I need
come in to my arms don't let me bleed
I am the grassman
put me where you choose
I am the grassman
I will burn for you
I am the grassman
put me where you choose
I am the grassman
I will burn for you
I will burn for you yeah
up on the hillside in the night
burnt so fierce I scorched the sky
join me now stand by my side
and in the morning we'll be gone
and the blessed people come
and there's nothing in the shadows that we saw
I am the grassman
put me where you choose
I am the grassman
I will burn for you
repeated
The lyrics to Dodgy's song "Grassman" can be interpreted in a few different ways, but at its core, the song seems to be about an intense and possibly dangerous love between two people. The first verse sets the tone, with the singer proclaiming that they would not die for their lover, but they would kill for them. They're willing to make sacrifices for their love, to the point where they are willing to choose the man who will be sacrificed. This line is particularly dark and sets the stage for the rest of the song's themes of devotion and dedication.
In the chorus, the singer becomes the "grassman," a kind of mystical figure who is willing to be put wherever their lover chooses and burn for them. The imagery is intense - the grassman is a kind of sacrifice, but also a willing participant. The following lines suggest that the relationship between the singer and their lover is often filled with pain and violence, but it's worth it for the forgetfulness it brings. The use of "scratch my back and pull my hair" might imply that there is an element of BDSM in the relationship, or at least a willingness to explore physical pleasure with abandon.
The last verse brings more mystery to the lyrics, with references to storms and a world that might be "worthless now." The lover is compared to heroin, something the singer needs to survive. But ultimately, the song ends with a sense of release - the grassman burning fiercely and then disappearing in the morning, leaving nothing but memories behind.
Overall, "Grassman" is an intense song that explores the complex emotions of a passionate but possibly dangerous relationship. It's a song that could be interpreted in many ways, but at its core, it's about the lengths we'll go to for love.
