The genesis of Dogstar was a chance encounter between Reeves and Mailhouse in a supermarket in 1991; Mailhouse was wearing a Detroit Red Wings hockey sweater, and Reeves (an avid hockey fan and a keen player of the sport) asked if Mailhouse needed a goalie. Their shared interest in the sport developed into a friendship. Initially, they began jamming together in private. The band went through several lineups before Domrose joined in 1994. .
Mailhouse found the name in the book Sexus, written by Henry Miller.
In 1995 they opened for Bon Jovi in Australia and New Zealand and shared a stage with David Bowie.
The group released a four-track EP in early 1996, Quattro Formaggi (distributed by Zoo Entertainment) and followed this up with their debut album, Our Little Visionary, which was only distributed in Japan, but their fanbase was worldwide, and they played to audiences in the U.S., England, Australia and India. Whilst in India, they performed at the equivalent of the Academy Awards in India, the Zee Cine Awards. They also performed at the 1999 Glastonbury Festival.
Although the band members had other work commitments, a second album, Happy Ending followed in 1999, produced by Michael Vail Blum and Richie Zito. Domrose called the music on this record more "pop-aggressive" than the band's earlier work.
Their last performance was in October 2002 in Japan, and they have since folded. Reeves and Mailhouse later performed together in band Becky. Reeves left the band because of his working schedule, but he still plays with the band sometimes. Mailhouse has gone on to create the swedish band Sparhusen with Todd ''Cavedog'' Spahr.
The band later reformed in 2023 for a third album, Somewhere Between the Power Lines and Palm Trees.
It has been announced that Dogstar will be performing in Niagara Falls sometime in October 2023.
Halo

Cannot run from
It's everywhere you go
So go numb
Lift your head to see
It's all gone
Now lie there wondering
What have you done
Hello - to my hollow one
With a halo
Offer up a scene that
Can't be seen
Fool me in all my love
Here's the one I
Cannot run from
It smothers me and
Makes me go numb
Now you're finding that
You need some
Just pull the sheet
Above your head now
Hello - To my hollow one
With a halo
Offer up a scene that
Can't be seen - fool me
I see a angel in thee
Sent from beyond
To entertain me
Fool me - I have believed
In all of the things you do-
They're all for you
The song "Halo" by Dogstar presents a haunting and introspective message. The first verse introduces the idea that there is one thing that you cannot escape from in life, no matter how much you try. This thing is represented by the "halo" mentioned in the chorus. The singer advises the listener to go numb in order to cope with the overwhelming presence of this halo. However, eventually, you will be forced to face it and wonder about the consequences of your actions.
The second verse reveals that the singer is also struggling with the halo, and it's suffocating effects. The listener is encouraged to find solace in pulling the sheet over their head, a symbolic gesture to shut out the world and its problems. The chorus repeats, emphasizing the significance of the halo and the need to offer up a scene that can't be seen, to deceive yourself into believing you can escape from it.
The final lines, "I see an angel in thee, Sent from beyond, To entertain me", suggest that the halo can take on different forms, even angelic ones. However, the singer acknowledges that they have been fooled and have believed in the things that were only meant to serve the halo's purpose.
Overall, "Halo" is a song that explores the idea of how difficult it can be to face our problems head-on. The use of the halo as a metaphor creates a somber and melancholic atmosphere that encourages deep reflection and introspection.
