@Vice This absolutely disgusting to see, so If my mother wanted to retire back home she wouldn’t know about any of this until she started living back there and started drinking and inhaling all of the toxic discharge coming from these aluminium factories.

Me personally I’ve always commented on how red the soil is in Jamaica, and it is only a matter of time for these gigantic corporations to come in and start extracting all of these many minerals from the mineral rich soil in the little island called Jamaica, so this means that many of me and mothers relatives have already been suffering this for many years.

And the time is now for action to be taken against this before it gets worse and becomes too late.

My first primary suggestion would be to have a campaign on what is going on, and the effects on how bad it is for the human body, mainly the acidic run off that poison humans slowly from inside out.

These dangerous effects target not only residents that live close by to the factories but also the employees, this happens slowly over time and as a result is hard to prove.......!!!!

This is crazy I’m from Nepal 🇳🇵and the same exact problem is happening over there. A us mining company is trying to set themselves up over there and take the profit and resources(including diamonds and uranium) for themselves. It’s extremely corrupt. What’s worse is that the Nepali government and people aren’t able to know about what’s going on, while the company has said that they will only work with a whole different country, India. Nepal is a much smaller and poorer third world country that needs something to boost their economy. The Nepali people have started great conflict and fought back with the problem becoming rapidly worse.

It is also the main reason we pick up those empty Aluminium Drink Cans from the side of streets and, in garbage containers whenever I see them for recycle as many of my overseas colleagues do not understand how important such a commodity is and, the process it takes to provide such material. We understand the challenges face by our Jamaican Prime Minister but, there has to be a better way for all of us Jamaicans living at home and abroad to work together in order to preserve our paradise island. I had the experience of traveling by the bauxite shipping port in Jamaica a number of times decades ago. Everything was covered by red dust. Horrible poverty in the local towns. Again major companies pay off the government leaders to sign contracts to make themselves rich and destroy the land.

I love Jamaica, it’s people and the history and culture. I’m Guyanese and we also produce Bauxite. The mining is also impacting the environment along with the felling of the lumber…Guyana, part of Amazonia is also threatened. Costa Rica is the only Caribbean nation who has created laws to protect their country’s natural resources. 27% of the land is secure from encroachment.
We must change this behavior soon or there will be no coming back. This documentary is well done and overdue. Thank you!

Just watched the second video updating this issue and came back to rewatch the first. My favourite part in this one is when Howard Mitchell, whom used to chair the Jamaica Bauxite Institute, explains the unsustainability of bauxite mining and doesn't deny his role in it or the fact that "in its hay day", it seemed to be a very prosperous venture for the island's economy (starts at 30:02). I can only hope the rest of the government will develop the foresight to see that the cons of continuing bauxite will ultimately outweigh the pros - but from the second video, it seems they still have their eyes closed.

I'm a recreational miner and prospector and you can bet that I would defend those beautiful lands from mining. The world has a large demand for precious metal's and we wouldn't be able to live the way we do anywhere in the world if not for mining these metals but destroying the planet to get these metal's is not the answer. Until we have the technology and engineering to remove these metal's from the earth in an environmentally safe way these environmentally sensitive area's of the world should never be touched.

This is a horrible atrocity, everyone owes it to the Maroons to get back this sacred place. These are the people that really pushed back against the invasion of Europe and slavery. It breaks my heart to see strong people who have been through so much and still to this day struggle to deal with oppression of companies that want to steal from Jamaica. Their prime minister says it pains him that he's accused of not caring about the environment but obviously he doesn't because if he did he'd protect the best interests of the people living in that area, which is unanimously to keep mining out of the region. A government that has failed to protect it's people is a failed government. I hope they keep up the fight and stand up to this corruption and win.

There are areas in Jamaica that must not be exploited and must be treated as though this island has already been exhausted where bauxite mining is concern. This procedure would reflect a considerate and caring attitude of the Prime Minister of Jamaica along with the miners, if they possess any such godlike qualities. Instead of a selfish, insensitive and greedy satanic exploitation of the land at the expense of the inhabitants of the community and its surrounding areas, they should consider what they will do when it is all gone and do just that. Whether or not the cockpit country is raped to an irreversible and permanent demise, the inhabitants thereof shall not be benefited one way or the other. Here in Mexico, from where I write this, 30% of the national territory (predominantly that which corresponds to indigenous communities) has been concessioned to Canadian mining companies. My father Isaac Turner was a Maroon, he died working in the mine for the bauxite company from asthma. Looking at the comments I conclude that a whole bunch of caring people have incorrectly framed the issue. May it be Jamaica, Grenada or Barbados we need to take control of our resources and be more innovative so we can compete in export markets, reduce or debt and develop a visible middle class. Access to the Beach is one issue but at the polls we should be asking why can't a group of islands own a hotel chain, why can't an island with oil or bauxite do better than exporting the resource for a small royalty. Where are all of our graduate students with 12 CXC, Batchelor and masters degree that should be contributing their acquired knowledge.
