Honestly, common sense skeptic did a great video on the topic of space colonization a while back. The conclusion could quite literally be summarized as :

"living on another planet is very much just gonna be a pipedream for almost ever, as space is just too dangerous, empty and large for anyone to really be able to successfully traverse it. At the end of the day, earth is all we got, so we should stop lying to ourselves while continue to dream that we could ever create and or find ourselves a new earth to move to anytime soon. Nor is the idea of space colonization even a new pipe dream either."

To Kelly's point about gravity outside Earth as well, there's so many small aspects of childhood development and even embryology that people rarely consider or talk about but which are fundamentally linked to the specific gravitational pull we have grown up with as a species. For example, even the early developmental aspects of the inner ear, the semicircular canals which control a large portion of balance perception and, when out of equilibrium, can cause a person to experience things like severe vertigo or nystagmus, these things are not going to have the benefit of Earth's gravity to help when they wire early on in a young human...not at least without some way of normalising that gravity beforehand 😐

It's astonishing that those people are inspired by sci-fi, but somehow don't know how to understand sci-fi. There's a lot of media that deals with gravity on other planets. Regardless of whether it's accurate representation or not, it should make you at least acknowledge that it's something you should think about. But at the end of the day, they're not even idealistic dreamers, but mere fans of sci-fi AND themselves, and can view neither critically.

The whole bone density and strength thing just echoes to me the "belters" in The Expanse, which primarily are disconnected from earthly humans and live in space, and coming down to planets was insanely painful for them because their bodies were so weak from changing so drastically in space. When astronauts come back their bone density can be built up to a degree, but is forever changed and never completely repairs back to where it was.

Microelectronics was heavily invested in miniaturization for space flight. The tech existed but it was extremely expensive compared to the typical room sized computers at the time. Then NASA invested billions as the first adopters. Also all gps is based off our ability to get things to space

I feel like a lot of people would be willing to go into space (including me) if we had a guaranteed way to get back home. No one could cope with living on the Moon full time for the rest of their lives. But if we did it in six-month shifts, it would be more appealing. Spend some time making absolute bank for half the year in space and spend the rest at home on Earth.

I live in Western Australia and the outback where all the mining operations are conducted is basically as barren and hostile as another planet, and many people willingly go out there to work for half the year (week there, week back) and make a shit tone of money doing so. It might just be the Perth in me, but bring on the interplanetary FIFO!

Agree with most points and arguments, but I feel like this came from a place of over-cynicism. I think saying that space is pointless or has no scientific use is just wrong. I agree that space is overhyped for various purposes and it isn't going to bring on a utopia any time soon, but to say that Lunar or Mars missions would have no scientific value is just a dangerous idea to advertise. It's dangerous because that backs the idea that not all science and research have equal value. That idea to "streamline and focus resources" only accomplishes one thing, it drastically decreases funding for science and research. So many discoveries came by accident or from studies that were underfunded and at risk of cancellation because there wasn't any useful science to gain from it. mRNA medicine came from an underfunded study constantly at risk of cancellation because the field was deemed to be a dead end and an impossible problem to solve.

I do think they are being a bit dismissive about the commercial benefits of space exploration. Just to name a few things that came out of the Apollo program, we've got modern avionics, advances in protective equipment, advances in fireproof materials, advances in computer technology, certain food preservation techniques, and many others. It might have been a dick measuring contest, but it was still worth doing and a lot better than our traditional method of settling issues of national prestige: war.

I think the key commonality between antartica, the sea bed, and space, which makes countries willing to not lay stake to it, is that nobody wants to live there. It’s real-estate. They’ll try to get resources from it once that becomes equally or more profitable than getting then elsewhere, but wars are fought over livable, especially fertile, land.

There is a huge amount of value in space tech - global positioning alone has vastly grown the world’s economy. Aviation communications, space imagery, launch detection, satellite meteorology, space clocks, asteroid protection, ISS biological experimentation, etc all have significant value. It’s not just a jolly.

"Potential fossil traces of life"... Not "life on Mars".. The potential that it in the geological past there could have been life, not current life. Also, those fossil traces have been shown by chemist to form naturally as well, so most scientists do not accept this "proof" anymore.

I think that Zach saying, about 15 mins in, that people "wouldn't tune in" to watch space launches after the Apollo missions is an oversimplification of the social dynamic that I often hear from people, and I think it does a disservice. It's not that people weren't interested in space, per se, but that they were getting used to space launches, and so got tired of having regular broadcasting interrupted by space launches. There's a distinction here to be made. It's not that they were saying, "Ugh, not another space launch!" but rather, "Ugh, I know, we launch these things all the time, lemme watch Barney Miller (or whatever)! You can fill me in on the details later!"

And would I want 4% of the budget spent on getting 2 guys (3, really) to the moon? Um, yes? The advances made to propulsion, computer technology, flight technology, and so on, and so on, is immeasurable. The space program catapulted us forward farther than we can truly ever know. So, yes, I would absolutely accept having 4% of the budget, or even a little more, spent on that. You can take it out of the military budget, thank you!

My issue with astronomers is that the only reason we’re forced to do astronomy from earth is that orbital telescopes are expensive - but with lift getting cheaper it gets cheaper to have an orbital telescope. So in the end… the economics of it might make astronomy just move off planet as a process bar the most high altitude locations

Easy answer: Ocean Gate. Rocket (maybe) lands, then splat. Everyone’s dead.

As for sacrificing 4% of the national budget to explore the Moon’s lava tubes, shit yes! Just take it out of the military’s yearly blank check. Tell Lockheed to only charge us for 5 vehicles that won’t work off the production line, instead of 6!

The one problem I have with their discussion is when they say that "grabbing territory is a human thing", but it isn't. There are a LOT of examples of people and societies weren't imperialist landgrabbers, they just don't tend to survive contact with expansionist empires or cutthroat corporations.

If we somehow manage to send people to space who aren't sociopaths and have no loyalty to a corporation or nation, and being in space doesn't harm their psychology, then it might be totally fine! Then, raising kids up there is going to be a fun experiment.

In my opinion, It's the chance to start again and be a discoverer, an explorer, to stake out your claim and build something different. Here on earth that's mostly done, so we all are explorers and builders and doers and we've got only the sea to explore basically left.
