What A Night
Dolly Dots Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's a new place for you to go
Everybody's here that you wanna know
This place is hot and about to blow
Music is live and the lights are low

They may be queuing at the door
But we got room for more, more, more
Pump up the volume, turn out the light
Everybody's gonna dance tonight
Tell all the neighbors, put up a sign
Everybody's having fun tonight
What a night, what a night
Everybody's gonna dance tonight
What a night, what a night
Wowowow, what a night

Not many houses on the block
Ours is the one that really rocks
Every night it's a wild affair
Come on through the door, let down your hair
Oh yeah

The place is jumping, don't be square
If you come single, you'll leave in pairs

Pump up the volume, turn out the light
Everybody's gonna dance tonight
Tell all the neighbors, put up a sign
Everybody's having fun tonight
What a night, what a night
Everybody's gonna dance tonight
What a night, what a night
Wowowow, what a night

Wowowow, what a night
What a night, what a night
Pump up, pump up
Wowowow, what a night
Huhuhuh
What a night, what a night
What a night, what a night
What a night, what a night
What a night, what a night
Wowowow, what a night

They may be queuing at the door
But we got room for more, more, more

Pump up the volume, turn out the light
Everybody's gonna dance tonight
Tell all the neighbors, put up a sign
Everybody's having fun tonight
What a night, what a night
Everybody's gonna dance tonight
What a night, what a night
Wowowow, what a night

You’re not the only one who’s never heard of these amazing Dutch ladies; I actually discovered the Dolly Dots a couple of days ago &, being the fact that I’m an 80s boy, I found their spectacular music is right up my alley because of their diversity all throughout their short but fantastic career 🎵 🎼 🎶 😉 ☝️
Speaking of which, my favorite songs of theirs are:
1. Boys (Tell it all About)
2. We Believe in Love 🥰 😻 😍
3. Leila(Queen of Sheba)
4. What a Night
5. Don’t Give Up
6. She’s a Liar 🤥
7. Do You Wanna Wanna...?
8: Radio 📻

The first I knew of Dolly Dots was on a 1988 PWL video 'The Hit Factory' (yes, Stock, Aitken and Waterman), back in 1990. It was the last track and, in the pre-internet era, my only reference point to this group.

Then, via a podcast on David Lloyd's Radio Moments, I found that 'Radio' was used to open an East Midlands ILR [Independent Local Radio] station in 1980, which had encouraged me to explore the Dolly Dots canon even further.

Dolly Dots are a guilty pleasure. I haven't listened to this in years and there's a part that reminds me of Dancing Queen.
