Whatever you needed
Whatever you asked for
You received it
Whatever you borrowed
You tended to keep it
Whatever you told me
And, buffalo gal, don't you go out tonight
I'll do my best to keep you inside
Away from the rest of those looks that you get
From the boys who are passing you by
Passing you by
I don't blame you
For retreating
I couldn't sustain you
Or keep you from leaving
And I was a fool
For ever thinking
I could change someone
Whose affections were so fleeting
So, buffalo gal, don't you go out tonight
I'll do my best to keep you inside
Away from the rest of those looks that you get
From the boys who are passing you by
Passing you by
Buffalo gal, don't you go out tonight
I'll do my best to keep you inside
Away from the rest of those looks that you get
From the boys who are waiting in line
Waiting in line
The lyrics of Dolorean’s “Buffalo Gal” tell the story of a man who was deeply committed to a woman who didn't reciprocate his feelings, leaving him with a broken heart. The opening lines of the song are straightforward; they illustrate how the man gave the woman whatever she wanted, needed, or asked for, and even believed whatever lies she told him, which ultimately led him to be vulnerable and trust her blindly.
As the song progresses, the man acknowledges that he is aware of why the woman left him, stating that he could not sustain her or prevent her from leaving. The line "I was a fool for ever thinking I could change someone whose affections were so fleeting" highlights the man's tone of acceptance and regret, as he comes to terms with the fact that he was just foolishly in love. However, the chorus of the song, which repeats the line "buffalo gal, don't you go out tonight, I’ll do my best to keep you inside," reflects the unresolved feelings of the man who still loves the woman and wants to protect her. He doesn't want her to go out and be with anyone else; he wants to keep her inside and safe.
In conclusion, Dolorean's "Buffalo Gal" is a bittersweet song that speaks to the complexities of love and heartbreak. The man's caring nature and his desire to protect the woman whom he loves are admirable, even though she doesn't share his affection.
