2. Dolphin are a three piece indie rock band from Christchurch, New Zealand that formed in 1987 and have released 3 eps and 5 albums. The band comprise of Kevin Stokes (Vox, Gat), Rob Mayes (Bass, Gat), Steve Birss (Drums) and Tracy Thompkins (drums). Dolphin's sound is a jagged blend of melodic guitars and driving rhythms, broadly defined as melodic alternative rock.
They spent 3 years in the UK and toured the east coast of America under the name Delphy which they changed to avoid confusion with other bands using that name in Europe. They reverted back to Dolphin upon return to New Zealand.

Known to many through his music which ranges from punk funk to hip hop, Dolphin has an extremely wide range of both musical influences and efforts. With influences that range from David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust" era, James Brown and the Jb's, Funkadelic, Prince, Shuggie Otis, Frank Zappa, Nick Drake, Sun Ra, Joy Division, the Cure, Mobb Deep, Jay Dilla of Slum Village, The Velvet Underground, Bad Brains, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Kraftwerk, Roy Ayers, Sly Stone, and Joni Mitchell, one never knows exactly what type of music Dolphin will record and present. Equally as complex is his style of recording to achieve his sound, which could range from a mid seventies analog recording techniques used by the Beatles and the Stones ("Everything is live instruments, from the drums to the guitars, no loops or electronic conditioning, it's naturally textured before it ever sees a computer") to making hip hop beats in the vein of Dj Premier, Pete Rock, or the late great James "Dilla" Yancey ("That is a completely different technique, I make all the beats before they ever see a computer using various methods from 'chopping' sounds to live instruments, the traditional way of making real beats"). Dolphin scores, writes, and performs all his own material preferring to be at the helm of all studio and live efforts.

The lyrics of the Dolphin's song "Sunset" talk about the ending of a day and the emotions that come with it. The first verse describes the sunset and how it seems like the heart of the day is sinking into the ocean. The wind is also crying over the world that's disappearing into the darkness. The second verse talks about saying goodbye to things that cannot be brought back and accepting that reality. The final moments are etched in the singer's memory, like a knife that's stuck in it.
The chorus of the song repeats that there's nothing left but the two lovers in the light of the setting sun. There's no faith, love, peace or war, only them and the glowing light shining through their eyes.
