The First Noel
Domenico Savino And His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The First Noel, the Angels did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the East beyond them far
And to the earth it gave great light
And so it continued both day and night.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

And by the light of that same star
Three Wise men came from country far
To seek for a King was their intent
And to follow the star wherever it went.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

This star drew nigh to the northwest
O'er Bethlehem it took its rest
And there it did both Pause and stay
Right o'er the place where Jesus lay.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

Then entered in those Wise men three
Full reverently upon their knee
And offered there in His presence
Their gold and myrrh and frankincense.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord
That hath made Heaven and earth of nought
And with his blood mankind has bought.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!

Overall Meaning

The First Noel is a classic Christmas carol that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. The lyrics tell the story of a star that appeared to the shepherds in the fields where they were keeping their sheep. The star led the Wise Men to Bethlehem where they found the baby Jesus and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. The lyrics encourage all to sing praises to God for creating the world and saving mankind through the birth of Jesus.

The song opens with the announcement of the birth of Jesus by the angels to the shepherds. The shepherds were poor and were living in the fields, where they tended their sheep. The night was bitterly cold, but it was also the night that the Savior was born. The word "Noel" is repeated several times, which is a French word meaning "Christmas" or "the birth of Christ".

The second verse speaks of the star that appeared in the sky, which guided the Wise Men to Bethlehem. The star was so bright that it illuminated the way both day and night, leading the Wise Men to the manger where Jesus was born. The third verse describes the arrival of the Wise Men, who brought gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. They bowed down before Jesus and offered Him their gifts.
In the final verse, the song encourages everyone to join in singing praises to the Lord, who created the world and humankind, and who sent Jesus to save us all.
