One of Us
Dominic Cooper & Amanda Seyfried Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

They passed me by, all of those great romances
It's as if you're robbing me, of my rightful chances
My picture clear, everything seemed so easy
And so I dealt you the blow, one of us had to go

Now it's different, I want you to know

One of us is crying, one of us is lying
In her lonely bed
Staring at the ceiling
Wishing she was somewhere else instead

(One of us is lonely), one of us is lonely
One of us is only, waiting for a call
Sorry for himself, feeling stupid, feeling small
Wishing he had never left at all

I saw myself as a concealed attraction
I felt you kept me away from the heat and the action
Just like a child, stubborn and misconceiving
That's how I started the show, one of us had to go

Now I've changed and I want you to know

One of us is crying, one of us is lying
In her lonely bed
Staring at the ceiling
Wishing she was somewhere else instead (one of us is lonely)

(One of us is lonely), one of us is only
Waiting for a call
Sorry for herself, feeling stupid, feeling small
Wishing she had never left at all

Never left at all

Staring at the ceiling
Wishing she was somewhere else instead

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Dominic Cooper's song "One of Us" express regret and longing for a lost love. The singer reflects on past relationships and missed opportunities for great romance, feeling like his chances have been taken away. He blames his former lover for keeping him away from the excitement and passion of life.

The chorus reveals that the breakup has left both parties in a state of sorrow and loneliness. One of them is crying and lying in bed, while the other is waiting for a call and feeling sorry for themselves. They both wish they were somewhere else instead, emphasizing the sense of longing and nostalgia that runs throughout the song.

However, the singer also acknowledges that he may have played a role in the breakup. He compares himself to a child, stubborn and misconceiving, and admits to dealing the final blow to end the relationship. But he also claims to have changed and wants his former lover to know that he has grown and matured.

Overall, "One of Us" is a poignant ballad about lost love and the pain of regret. The lyrics capture the complexity of relationships and the way that they can change us as individuals.

Just taking a moment to appreciate the gorgeous cinematography....lovely scene

I admire the filmmakers a great deal for exactly this reason. With the popularity of the first film and the strength of the cast and songbook, they could so easily have phoned this one in on a technical level and still have made a fortune. Instead, it was jam-packed with ambitious, creative delights just like this. Wonderful film, it really was.

Those transitions are so clever you almost don't notice how beautiful the set decor is, especially her room with it's Mediterranean blues and greens, and all the lovely detail which tells you so much about her character.

I'm just wondering how amanda still looks the same as in the first movie even tho it's been so many years

Marina Tz

Haha yeah but I feel like they kind of did her dirty with the makeup cause the matte look made her look older

Luka V

@Marina Tz yeah I mean she was only 21 and 32 when these movies were filmed. She just gave birth to her first baby before they shot the 2nd one

Marina Tz

@Luka V yes of course but I don’t know to me a matte look doesn’t suit the island esthetic. It’s probably just a me thing tho
