Wurli
Dominic Fike Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Steppin' outside for you
Then I put links on both wrists
'Cause you got control over me
And you got jokes like you don't need love, baby
We don't need long
Just follow my lead for once
I can never make up for the time
I'm gon' make the wait all worth the ride

Not like this, I'm not goin' out
This is not love, I'm a glorified doorstop
Stickin' my foot out for you
And that's not all I would do
Oh, bae, you got me by my hands and (oh, bae, you got me, bae, you got me, bae)
I'm steppin' out with shackles on my ankles (oh, bae, you got me, bae, you got me, bae)
You wonder why you turned me to a standstill
They say, "never bothered me" but

Not like this, I'm not goin' out
This is not love, I'm a glorified doorstop
Stickin' my foot out for you
And that's not all I would do
Not like this, I'm not goin' out
This is not done, this is sort of like love
When I'm stickin' my foot out for you
But it's not all I would do

Steppin' outside for you
Then I put links on both wrists
'Cause you got control over me
And you got jokes like you don't need love, baby
We don't need long
Just follow my lead for once
I can never make up for the time
I'm gon' make the wait all worth the ride

Overall Meaning

In Dominic Fike's song "Wurli," he sings about being completely under someone's control and doing whatever they ask of him. He starts the song by saying he is stepping outside for this person, but then he puts links on both his wrists, showing that he is willing to be restrained for them. Fike acknowledges that this person has control over him and jokes that they do not need love, but it is clear that he is deeply enamored with them. He admits that he can never make up for the time he has lost with them, but he is willing to do whatever it takes to make the wait worth it.

The chorus repeats the lines "Not like this, I'm not going out / This is not love, I'm a glorified doorstop" over and over again. It seems that Fike is aware that this relationship is unhealthy and that he is being used, yet he continues to stick his foot out for this person, willing to do whatever they ask of him. He even says that he is steppin' out with shackles on his ankles, further emphasizing that he feels trapped in this situation.

Overall, "Wurli" is a song about being completely under someone's control, even when it is not healthy for the person being controlled. It shows the lengths that someone will go to for love, even when it is not reciprocated.

@@raqueladonis5374 you’re only job as a dude is to hold doors open for women by sticking out your foot to leave the door open

@@raqueladonis5374 I think he means he can't truly get over someone he broke up with and always keeps his hope that they might get back together. i.e. he keeps the door open for her, sticking his foot out, refusing to fully cut her off, something a lot of us are guilty of as well.

There is something so nostalgic about the chorus for some reason. It reminds me of early mornings when it’s still dark outside, and you’re at a gas station alone, nobody around, but you don’t feel threatened or endangered, it’s chilly and misty. Kind of like an early car ride to the airport. Streets are empty, it’s pretty quiet, idek..
