This song was from around 1951, and Clyde MacPhatter was one of the member of Billy Ward & the Dominoes, but you could hear Clyde's voice in the background. He left the group in around 1953 to formed the Drifters and "Money Honey" was the song that started it all, and that was from 1954 where Clyde MacPhatter was one of original member of the Drifters.

Absolutely, one of many, the so called rock tunes of the 50's were hardly different then the Jump Blues of the mid-late 40's, Big Joe Turner, T-Bone Walker, Lowell Fulsom, Johnny Otis, Lois Jordan, Hank Ballard were already rockin' and rockin' hard! They were called race records then and at the time were not well recognized in the national spotlight and outside of black settings.

"the early rock and roll was just r&b marketed at a general audience." Rock and roll music such as "Rock The Joint" by Jimmy Preston and "Boogie At Midnight" by Roy Brown was a new kind of r&b (nobody was shouting about rocking over a backbeat in 1945) being marketed to blacks very successfully as of 1949. An early example of rock and roll being marketed to whites was Kay Starr's "Oh Babe" in 1950. The expression "rockers" was being used in 1949 and the expression "rock and roll performers" was being used in 1951; throughout 1949-1951 that sound was mostly associated with black musicians.

PJDooWop, you're right, as usual. The scholarly observation posted earlier does not account for the teenage audience that drove the charts. When Little Anthony would shout, "ARE YOU READY TO ROCK 'N' ROLL?" nobody gave a flip about Jimmy Preston or Kay Starr. The audience KNEW that R 'n' R meant Doo Wop. The Platters were introduced as one of the premier Rock 'n' Roll acts. We knew Rock and Roll. It was only later that the marketing meanies and radio DJs began to separate out back beat music from the really good music. I suspect that the presence and discography of a man name Elvis Presley had a lot to do with that.

Rock and roll was originally named after music that had lyrics about rocking and rolling (such as "Hole In The Wall" by Albennie Jones and "Rock And Roll" by Bill Moore). From 1951 on, some people used "rock and roll" broadly to include all R&B such as the Platters, no one's denying that. The teenagers who cared about Little Anthony weren't the same teenagers who cared about Jimmy Preston (who drove those same charts, at his peak) simply because of the number of years that had passed, but rock and roll was made throughout that whole period. The people who emulated each other in using backbeat more and more on songs about "rocking" during 1947-1953 were a bunch of (almost entirely) black musicians; what that had to do with Presley is nothing.

There were only a handful of bands using backbeat with blues during 1944-1946, notably Lionel Hampton and Buddy Johnson who were both famous, using it often, and also white bandleader Tex Beneke on his 1946 version of Hampton's "Hey Ba-Ba-Re-Bop" and Harry James on his 1944 hit "Back Beat Boogie." Hank could have been inspired by any of them to do so. But they and he weren't singing about rocking, which was an important part of the "rockers" style because Wynonie Harris, Wild Bill Moore, Jimmy Preston, etc. knew that the average black person had previously associated backbeat largely with gospel music and had associated the wording rocking and rolling largely with gospel music ("rock my soul in the bosom of Abraham," etc.), and thus could understand that they were being playfully very sacreligious when a song about "rocking"=partying was in gospel style. (Bill Broonzy, for one, once said he thought things like that were offensive, but they didn't care what a guy in his 40s thought, they wanted to be successful with the kids.) There had been many parodies of gospel music in black secular music here and there before (Newman White collected a number in the 1910s) -- what made this style new in that regard was that the jump blues form a la Louis Jordan and the words rocking and rolling were routinely used. The call-and-response-ish stuff we associate with rock and roll was an important part of uptempo blues going way back, including pre-rock-and-roll jump blues and pre-rockabilly "hillbilly boogie" (which was inspired by jump blues) such as "Boogie Woogie Boy" by Porky Freeman with Merle Travis, 1944 (btw check out the start of that guitar solo!).

Examples of musicians who weren't black who were making rockers before Presley began recording are Curtis Gordon with "Rompin' And Stompin'" and Kay Starr with "Oh Babe." They were inspired to do that because they had heard rockers like "Rock The Joint" by Jimmy Preston and "Rockin' All Day" by Jimmy McCracklin.

I feel the problem with this debate is that there is no "first" rock and roll record, music was evolving into what we now call rock and roll and I'm sure some folks see "rock and roll" differently as some other folks do, for more than one reason. It's the process not the destination that really matters. Great record, regardless and it's popularity made it a game changer as well as the music itself.

All experts agree on that. There are a lot of different elements that came together to form R 'n' Roll. I've heard songs form the '40s that were outright R 'n' R in one or more ways that didn't use the R & B backbeat drums.

I remember a teacher playing this as "the first rock and roll song". I would later hear "Rocket 88", and even "Rock Around The Clock"! Rock and roll evolved slowly. Many R&B songs from the late '40's are as close to doowop of the mid-late '50's as you can get. I would say this cut and Rocket 88 are a tie score, if you need to have an answer. By the way if you can't see that "Sixty Minute Man" isn't sexual, you're not very intuitive. "If your man ain't treating you right , Come up and see ol' dan, I rock 'em, roll 'em all night long, I'm a sixty-minute man..."
