Layla
Dominos Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What'll you do when you get lonely
And nobody's waiting by your side?
You've been running and hiding much too long
You know it's just your foolish pride

Layla, you've got me on my knees
Layla, I'm begging, darling please
Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind

I tried to give you consolation
When your old man had let you down
Like a fool, I fell in love with you
Turned my whole world upside down

Layla, you've got me on my knees
Layla, I'm begging, darling please
Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind

Let's make the best of the situation
Before I finally go insane
Please don't say I'll never find a way
And tell me all my love's in vain

Layla, you've got me on my knees
Layla, I'm begging, darling please
Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind

Layla, you've got me on my knees

Layla, I'm begging, darling please
Layla, darling won't you ease my worried mind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of “Layla” by Eric Clapton and Jim Gordon, recorded by the band Derek and the Dominos, tell a story of unrequited love and heartbreak. The song is reportedly inspired by Clapton’s infatuation with Pattie Boyd, the wife of his friend and fellow musician George Harrison. The song is written as a plea to a woman named Layla who has been running and hiding from love due to her “foolish pride.” Clapton asks her what she will do when she gets lonely and nobody is there for her, and begs her to ease his worried mind.

The chorus of the song is a repetition of Clapton’s plea to Layla to ease his worried mind, while admitting that he fell in love with her despite her past disappointment with men. Clapton attempts to console her, but his attempts are ultimately rejected, making him feel helpless and desperate. The final verse of the song is a plea to make the best of the situation before he goes insane, begging Layla not to tell him that his love is in vain. The song ends with Clapton repeating the chorus, hoping that Layla will grant him the relief he seeks.

1970. I (27) was madly in love with a 21-year-old, woman who went on to do modeling. A real beauty. But ya know, that was only a part of it. She had this amazing sexy, fluid tenor voice and a laugh that would melt my heart. SHE ABSOLUTELY LOVED THIS SONG. I bought the cassette and every time we hit the road, top-down on a Buick Grand Sport, we'd sing, pound on the dash, swinging and swaying....Sadly, I drove her to modeling school in Miami 2 years later and we never saw one another again. This song still after all these years tugs at my heartstrings.
