Amen to that! Whitlock has never received the acclaim he deserved with George Harrison or the Layla album. From the 1st time I listened to Layla in 1971, his writing and soulful vocals stood out above Clapton's and his kybd contribution were as 'instrumental' as Eric and Duane's guitars.

It's almost like Clapton shed all of his British englishness and totally immerse himself into Americana. He combined the sounds of Dylan and the band, a very nascent Allman Brothers, the Tulsa sound and a lot of the West Coast and rolled it all up into one big Clapton groove.

I've long felt the Dominos period was some of Clapton's very best work. It was a kick to hear Tedeschi/Trucks reprise this at one of Clapton's Crossroads events a few years back. They did a great job, but this was the original, and takes me back enjoying some meditation vegetation driving my old '69 Firebird down the road. Great days and great music.

Eric Clapton said, in his autobiography, that the team of Carl Radle, Jim Gordon, and Bobby Whitlock, were the most powerful rhythm section that he ever played with. He said that he thought that Jim Gordon was the greatest rock n roll drummer of all time. Listening to this album, I can see, or rather hear, why.

Jimi Hendrix said Terry Kath was the best he ever heard. Sometimes these musicians are prone to hyperbole. No disrespect to Mr. Gordon, but Eric played with Keith Moon and more importantly Ginger Baker. Unless he played with Buddy Rich or Gene Krupa, he never had a better drummer than Ginger.

Don't forget that Bobby Whitlock also pushed Clapton in the vocals department. Accept the fact or not, Clapton was singing with an American musician that was born and raised in the South. And as such was influenced throughout his entire life by racially diverse country, gospel, blues and rock singers in an atmosphere most English musicians of the time would kill to have experienced. YouTube has changed things a bit because exposure to that Southern life experience is now on tap.

Even though I know this was written as a romantic love song. I always think of my old boss at strung out guitars. He was such a friend to me and he always made a smile appear on someone's face once they walked in. He passed away a few years ago and i really miss him. I didn't know how much it would hurt.

after playing this record which is my fav of all time now I hear 70s California rock in colab with white blues of UK. such powerful transition from slower to fast rhythms. this is masterpiece.

Back in the day my girlfriend played a trick on me. She pointed to her dresser drawer and told me to tidy up its contents. Buried under the messy clothes was this album. It was my birthday gift. I can remember weeping over Thorn Tree in the Garden after she split a few years later...

true story, that song was about Bobby's Dog he had to leave behind because he switched apartments and they didn't allow him to have a dog in the new place.

I was 14 when I went to this first concert of many - Derek & the Dominoes, Bobby Whitlock absolutely eclipsed Clapton playing Stormy Monday on a Grand PiANO at the Pasadena Civic yes I started wearing pink bell bottoms too

I played this album to death as teen in the 1970s. Layla the song was the smash hit, but this was probably my favorite of the whole album. And now I can hear the amazing guitar being played so much better than what I could back then. (I should have kept that vinyl, but I had worn it out.) And CDs were so much more durable when they appeared

The best blues rock ever put down onto acetate. Allman bros live at fillmore East is 2nd. I would put Led Zep #4 at 3rd but the first two will always remain in their order.

I would agree. Dave Mason & REO Speedwagon had the kind of live albums
with cuts better than the studio versions. D & the Ds live Let It Rain is my
favorite lead guitar ever! (I hear they released an inferior one on the CD!)

I was thinking about Moon and his "lead drumming" while listening to this song for the 100th time in the last 50yrs. So much free interaction by Gordon seeming keeps the tune rolling, occasionally settling down...only to get riled up again. Incredibly articulate.
