He switched to electric piano and toured with Parliarment/Funkadellic in the early '70s. He later became an original member of Lenny White's Twennynine ("Peanut Butter"), a key piece in Jamaica Queens' '70s' jazz-funk explosion. A deal with GRP/Arista birthed the solo LP Don Blackman (1982), a good set saddled by poor promotion.
His extensive resumΓ© includes Kurtis Blow sessions and singing "Haboglabotrin" on Bernard Wright's 'Nard album. A fixture in New York studios, he has worked on sessions for a long list of artists including Nagee, David Sanborn, and Roy Ayers. And his composition "Live to Kick It" graced Tu-Pac's R U Still Down (Remember Me) release.

You set my soul on fire
You give me joy in my darkest night
I feel your love, I said all your love
Girl you want want to fly, we'll always gettin' high on life
So you say, you want to play, we haven't last the final day
But you tryin' do, all the things I skip for you
You are my life and my heart's desire
You set my soul on fire
Now the time is come and soon we have to run away
And now or never we'll be back in love again
But youre in my heart, you are wanted from the start
If you want what i do, share with me my love for you
You give me joy...
I feel your love...
You are my life...
The lyrics to Don Blackman's song Heart's Desire describe a profound love that is all-consuming, filling the singer with joy and setting their soul on fire. The subject of the song is the singer's heart's desire, the one who they have fallen deeply in love with. The lyrics seem to allude to a sense of urgency and impermanence as the singer describes a time to come when they will have to run away, and they express a desire to spend all their remaining time loving their heart's desire as much as possible. There is a sense of deep appreciation and gratitude in the lines "You give me joy in my darkest night/I feel your love, I said all your love," as if the singer has found a love that has brought light into their life even during the darkest times.
The lyrics also depict a sense of adventure and playfulness, as the singer's heart's desire expresses a desire to fly and play. The sense of adventure continues when the singer talks about doing all the things they skipped in the past for their heart's desire. There is a feeling of complete commitment and dedication to this love, which is perhaps why the singer feels so deeply grateful and joyous. The overall message of the song seems to be that true love can bring immense joy and can fill our lives with passion, purpose, and gratitude.

This is one of the most sophisticated musical performances on a Non-Jazz song ever. The bass and piano are outstanding, but the first thing I noticed was those sick double bass drums fills by Dennis Chambers. Now I am learning that bass line.
@johnnyluna7824
well said. Chambers drumming is ridiculous on this. Heβs like restrained and virtuosic at the same time.

I'm seriously upset and embarrassed in my ignorance right now. I grew up listening to a lot of Soul & Funk from the 1970s and 1980s. But until about 20 minutes ago I had no idea who Don Blackman was, or even heard any of his music. But I can say without question, the brutha was great musician and all around badass on keyboards. Respect and RIP.
