Don Caballero (affectionately called "Don Cab" or "The Don" by fans) formed in the summer of 1991, released five albums on Touch and Go Records between 1993 and 2000, then disbanded in November 2000. Drummer Damon Che recruited new personnel for a reconstituted Don Caballero in 2003, but this new lineup has been met with mixed reception from fans. They have since signed to Relapse Records and released a new album, titled World Class Listening Problem, on May 16, 2006.
Slice Where You Live Like Pie
Don Caballero Lyrics

My my my
Gimme a piece of where you live like pie
It's so neat, it's so sweet
Pie is something we can eat
Pumpkin here, brownstone there
Slice that real estate everywhere
Slice, slice, slice and eat it
You know where it's at
Put it in the fridge, save it for later
Pie is a thing houses want to be
(Master P guest rap)
We gonna ride tonight
Slice where you live like pie tonight
Yeah, yeah, Don Caballero likes that bud
But you know he ain't nothin' but a thug
That's right, that's right
Did I do that?
(Moog solo)
The first lines of Don Caballero's "Slice Where You Live Like Pie" suggest a voracious appetite for something. And later, the lyrics become clearer: the song is about slicing up real estate like a pie. The song celebrates the capitalist lust for property, with "Pumpkin here, brownstone there," and encourages cutting it up and consuming it. They describe it as so neat and sweet, like, something we can eat. It seems they are saying that owning property is like a commodity one can consume, just like pie. However, perhaps the lyrics aren't meant to be taken entirely seriously, and these lines are simply a quirky and playful way of playing with language.
What’s interesting about the song is that it starts with the sound of a guitar solo, which later transitions into the keyboard with its melody. They are mostly an instrumental band, but this song features a rapper too (Master P). Interestingly, "Slice Where You Live Like Pie" was influenced by jazz, as the band's members, including Damon Che their guitarist, individually listened to a lot of jazz music. That style is clear on this track, especially in the Moog solo. In addition to the jazz influence, they also drew inspiration from dub and reggae music, which can be heard in the rhythm section.
