I'm Still a King to You
Don Cherry Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Everytime my castles tumble
Everytime I'm feeling blue
You touch my hand and I understand
I'm still a king to you

Every, every time
My dreams are shattered
Every time they don't come true
You look at me and my heart can see
I'm still a king to you

Broken dreams can be mended
Castles can be built again
I'll go on trying forever
If you're besides me til then

Every, every time
My friends forsake me
Every time they say I'm through
I know they're wrong, I'll get along
I'm still a king to you

Every time that they forsake me
Every time they say I'm through

I'll get by, I'm a lucky guy
I'm still a king to you

Overall Meaning

In Don Cherry's "I'm Still a King to You," the singer expresses his feeling of emotional safety and security through the unconditional love of his partner. Despite facing numerous setbacks such as the shattering of his dreams, the loss of his success, and the abandonment of his friends, the singer takes solace in the fact that his love remains constant, and he's still a king in the eyes of his partner.

The songwriter uses metaphors to express his feelings, such as comparing his life's accomplishments to castles, and his dreams to shattered glass. The songwriter implies that no matter how much he falls or fails, his beloved partner's love is strong enough to serve as a foundation that he can always rely on. Thus, he uses the phrase, "broken dreams can be mended, castles can be built again" to signify his belief that the love will continue to protect his ego and keep him going.

The song's overall message is a message of comfort during times of emotional turmoil. Cherry seems to suggest that people will inevitably face hardships and disappointments in their lives, and while it can be challenging to cope with difficult times, it’s possible to rise above it with the love of someone else. Cherry's song emphasizes the healing power of love and the importance of having someone who supports us, even when everyone else has given up on us.

Great singer, we didn’t hear much of him in Britain, unfortunately.

My thanks to you as well for this posting. I used to work with his cousin and she was always talking about him - quite proud of him.

So glad you posted this one. Today I heard Elvis' "The Wonder of You" and this song came to mind - a sorta similar theme. My old 45 rpm wasn't Don Cherry. It was more of an Elvis wannabe, and all I could remember was the title-line. So thank you for the memories!
