Take Her Place
Don Diablo Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Left me high on our past time
Maybe if I use my imagination
Then I would be your love, you'd be mine
You know, I know, that we're both here all alone
Take my broken heart now and pull me close
I need somebody in the morning
Somebody to hold me tight
You don't even have to meet her
And you can take her place tonight
Don't even have to talk in the morning
Though I know that ain't right
But you can take her place tonight
You can take her place tonight
I need somebody in the morning
Somebody to hold me tight
You don't even have to meet her
And you can take her place tonight
Don't even have to talk in the morning
Though I know that ain't right
But you can take her place tonight
I close my eyes, need your sweet distraction
It's been a long time and we're out here on the line
Doesn't need to be right, I need to fight the attraction
I just need you to steal my heart away from my mind
Hope you know, I know, why we're both here all alone
But take my broken heart now and pull me close
You can take her place tonight
I need somebody in the morning
Somebody to hold me tight
You don't even have to meet her
And you can take her place tonight
Don't even have to talk in the morning
Though I know that ain't right
But you can take her place tonight
You can take her place tonight
I need somebody in the morning
Somebody to hold me tight
You don't even have to meet her
And you can take her place tonight
Don't even have to talk in the morning
Though I know that ain't right
But you can take her place tonight
Damn you look good, yeah, you know that I want you
It's nothing personal, might never call you
'Cause I have some issues and I gotta warn you
But I don't gotta lie, know that ain't right
You can take her place tonight
I need somebody in the morning
Somebody to hold me tight
You don't even have to meet her
And you can take her place tonight
Don't even have to talk in the morning
Though I know that ain't right
But you can take her place tonight
You can take her place tonight
I need somebody in the morning
Somebody to hold me tight
You don't even have to meet her
And you can take her place tonight
Don't even have to talk in the morning
Though I know that ain't right
But you can take her place tonight
In Don Diablo's Take Her Place, the persona seeks emotional comfort from a past lover. They are struggling with the idea of moving on and replacing their significant other, and so the persona calls upon the past lover to help ease their mind. They reminisce about past experiences and imagine the possibility of rekindling their love. The words “Maybe if I use my imagination / Then I would be your love, you’d be mine” suggest that the persona is playing out a scenario in their head which could lead to a reunion. They acknowledge the temporary nature of their current situation, but they also realize that they need someone to hold them tight and help them get through it.
The chorus “You can take her place tonight / I need somebody in the morning / Somebody to hold me tight / You don't even have to meet her” shows how desperate the persona is for emotional support. It seems that they are willing to settle for anyone as long as they can forget about the pain for a moment. The line “Damn you look good, yeah you know that I want you” conveys the idea that the persona is physically attracted to this person, but they also have personal issues that might prevent them from having a real relationship. The song suggests that sometimes, we find temporary relief in those who are not necessarily right for us, but it’s necessary for our emotional wellbeing.
