He started his career after facing many obstacles when Héctor Delgado (from the duo Héctor y Tito) gave him an opportunity to be a backup singer. After that, he sang in a live concert with Héctor and Tito in 2003, which was released later as a CD and DVD, which included the songs that became instant hits, Baila Morena and Amor de Colegio.
In 2005, Don Omar released the reggaeton album "Da Hitman Presents Reggaeton Latino", which broke the record for "Highest First Week Sales for a Reggaeton Album" by selling over 31,000 units in its first week, resulting a debut of #61 in The Billboard 200. Wisin y Yandel held that record until "Reggaeton Latino" was released.
The first single released from Reggaeton Latino, "Dale Don Dale [Remix]" , which features rapper Fabolous, debuted at #1 on the crossover chart.
He is currently signed to VI Music through Universal Music Latino.
In early 2006, the Governor of Puerto Rico, Aníbal Acevedo Vilá publicly mentioned interest in having Don Omar participate in a program against School Desertion. However, the Secretary of Education has rejected Don Omar sponsoring it due to his lyrics. The local press has also mentioned that Omar himself did not finish High School.
Currently has his own record label "El Orfanato" (The Orphanage) and had a magnificent performance in the 2011 Latin Music Billboard Awards where he received the Award for Latin Rythm Airplay.

Queriendo morir, llorando
The lyrics to Don Omar's "Ayer La Vi" tell the story of a woman who is seen drinking and crying, having had her dreams drowned in a bottle. The singer questions who could have hurt such a beautiful woman and left her in such a state. He blames the person who left her crying in a corner, and expresses regret that he cannot help her. The woman's pain is further emphasized by the metaphor of a flower wilting and a princess without a castle, asking how someone could let such a beautiful star fall and pay for it with suffering.
The singer expresses his desire for the woman's affection, despite her pain and her apparent reluctance to love again. He reflects on the fact that it was someone else's fault that she is in this situation, and wonders what he can do to help her. The lyrics suggest a hint of guilt or regret on the part of the singer himself: despite his affection for her, he was unable to prevent her suffering or provide her with the love she deserved. Overall, "Ayer La Vi" is a poignant meditation on the costs of heartbreak and the complexities of love.

Ayer la vi por ahí tomando
Yesterday I saw her drinking and crying
Queriendo morir, llorando
Wanting to die, crying
Who did this to her, so beautiful
Who drowns her dreams in that bottle
You left her crying in a corner
And yet here I am begging for her kisses
How could you not see what's inside
She doesn't want to love anymore and what can I do
It was all your fault for leaving her crying
No one lets such a beautiful flower die
Ni deja sin castillo a una doncella
Nor leaves a maiden without a castle
Quién bajó del firmamento tan linda estrella
Who brought down such a beautiful star from the sky
Paid her with suffering and now she doesn't shine
If now she cries alone, alone, all alone the sorrows of a love
Que sus hojas marchitan
That wither her leaves
