Flowers Won't Grow
Don Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Could it be our love
Wasn't planted deep enough
Or could it be we just didn't try
Looking back we see
So much that we left undone
We should have known it would wither and die

Flowers won't grow in gardens of stone
The ground must be tended but
We left it alone
The seeds that we scattered are
All parched and blown
Flowers won't grow in a garden of stone

Thinking 'bout it now
It was only pride I know
There was so much that we wouldn't give
Both of us in time took what
Might have been a home
And made it a place where nothing could live
Flowers won't grow in gardens of stone
The ground must be tended but
We left it alone
The seeds that we scattered are

All parched and blown
Flowers won't grow in a garden of stone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Don Williams's song "Flowers Won't Grow" are filled with the complexities of love, both beautiful and painful. The song revolves around a relationship that has ended, and the singer reflects on what went wrong. He asks himself whether the love they shared was not rooted deeply enough, or if they simply did not try hard enough to nurture it. Looking back, they see all the things they left undone, and the missed opportunities that could have saved their love. They should have known that it would wither and die, like flowers that won't grow in a garden of stone.

The song's chorus drives home the metaphor, as Don sings, "Flowers won't grow in gardens of stone / The ground must be tended but we left it alone / The seeds that we scattered are all parched and blown / Flowers won't grow in gardens of stone." It compares their love to a garden that has been neglected and left to die, with no chance of new growth. The singer realizes that their pride played a significant role in their relationship's downfall. They were unwilling to give up enough to make it work, and as a result, they ended up making it a place where nothing could live.

Overall, "Flowers Won't Grow" is a poignant and insightful song about the importance of nurturing love and paying attention to the things that matter. It teaches us that relationships take work, and that we need to be willing to make sacrifices if we want them to thrive.

Sincerely speaking, Don is really a gifted singer and in a class of his. In this particular song Don is conveying a special message about love. That is if love not tendered, captivated, it won't last and eventually it will die. How so true. I just love Don Williams.
