Honey I Still Do
Don Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well, you know I'm not much good at writin' letters
So I gave up and decided that I'd call
No, there's really not much news to tell you
Things back here, they never change at all
It's snowed today, it's cold here for November
But I hear the weather's warm out there.

Oh, and if you see Burt Reynolds
Would you shake his hand for me?
And tell old Burt, I've seen all his movies
Well, I hope you make the big time
I hope your dreams come true
But if Hollywood don't need you
Honey, I still do.

Last night I drove the truck to Amarillo
Some friends and I had a laugh or two
But lately we don't cut up like we used to
'Cause all that I can think about is you
I know this is what you've always wanted
But I know now that all I want is you.

Oh, and if you see Burt Reynolds
Would you shake his hand for me?
And tell old Burt, I've seen all his movies
Well, I hope you make the big time
I hope your dreams come true
But if Hollywood don't need you
Honey, I still do.

If Hollywood don't need you
Honey, I still do

Overall Meaning

The song "Honey I Still Do" by Don Williams is a heartfelt message from a man to his lover who has left to pursue her dreams in Hollywood. The lyrics express the man's difficulty in being apart from his love and his longing for her return. The opening lines, "Well, you know I'm not much good at writin' letters / So I gave up and decided that I'd call" sets the tone for the message he wants to convey. He's not able to effectively express himself through writing, so he's chosen to call instead, making the message seem more intimate and urgent.

The man yearns for his love and admits that there's not much news to update her on as things back home have not changed. It's snowy and cold in November, and he's heard the weather is warm where she is. The lyrics "But lately we don't cut up like we used to / 'Cause all that I can think about is you" emphasize the man's preoccupation with his lover. He's not enjoying companionship quite like he used to because he can't help but think about her.

The man then requests his lover to pass on a message to Burt Reynolds, a famous actor, asking her to shake his hand for him, and let him know that he's seen all his movies. This is a light-hearted moment in the song that lightens the mood and eases the intense feelings of separation expressed earlier. The song ends with a simple but powerful message, "But if Hollywood don't need you, Honey, I still do," underscoring man's commitment to his love and his willingness to be patient until she comes back.
