I'v Turned You To Stone
Don Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I wish there was some way to tell you I'm sorry
That I didn't leave you a long time ago
But many mistakes are part of the story
And heartache by heartache I've turned you to stone

So call me a traveller, gonna catch me a train
I want to see Frisco feel the sun shine again
If you want true love you can't stand alone
A life here together has turned you to stone

I've held you captive in a life without sunshine
And I've watched the blue in your eyes fade away
All good is gone now, no need to continue
Destroying each other day after day

So call me a traveller, gonna catch me a train
I want to see Frisco feel the sun shine again

If you want true love you can't stand alone
A life here together has turned you to stone

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Don Williams's song I'v Turned You To Stone are about a man reflecting on his past mistakes in a relationship that have led to the deterioration of his partner's love and happiness. He expresses his regret for not leaving her earlier and acknowledges that his heartaches and errors have caused her to turn cold and emotionless - 'turned you to stone'. The chorus suggests that the only way for him to escape the pain of his past mistakes is to leave and find happiness elsewhere. The man wants to recapture the joy and warmth of life that has been lost due to his destructive relationship.

The lyrics create a vivid image of a loveless, empty life that has been destroyed by the actions of the singer. The darkness of the song is emphasized by the metaphor of turning someone to stone. The image of someone who was once warm and vibrant, now cold and lifeless is a powerful one. The lyrics are full of regret at the loss of love and the destruction caused, but they also suggest that the only way forward is to move on and accept the consequences of our actions.
