If Hollywood Don
Don Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well you know I'm not much good at writin' letters
So I gave up and decided that I'd call
Now there's really not much news to tell you
Things back here they never change at all
It snowed today, it's cold here for November
But I hear the weather's warm out there

Oh, and if you see Burt Reynolds would you shake his hand for me
And tell ol' Burt I've seen all his movies
Well, I hope you make for big time, I hope your dreams come true
But if Hollywood don't need you, honey, I still do

Last night I drove the truck to Amarillo
Some friends and I we had a laugh or two
But lately we don't cut up like we used to
Cause all that I can think about is you
I know this is what you've always wanted
But I know now that all I want is you

So if you see Burt Reynolds would you shake his hand for me
And tell ol' Burt I've seen all his movies
Well, I hope you make for big time, I hope your dreams come true

But if Hollywood don't need you, honey, I still do
If Hollywood don't need you, honey, I still do

Overall Meaning

The song "If Hollywood Don't Need You" by Don Williams is a heart-wrenching tale of a man desperately missing his love who has gone to pursue her dreams in Hollywood. The singer of the song is not good at writing letters, so he decides to call his lover instead. He doesn't have much news to tell her other than it's cold and snowy where he is, while it's warm and sunny in Hollywood. He asks his lover to convey his regards to Burt Reynolds, a reference to the popular actor of the 70s and 80s, perhaps suggesting that Hollywood glamour is not all that different from the singer's world.

The singer reminisces about how he and his friends used to have a great time. However, since his lover left, he can't stop thinking about her. He admits that he knows this is what she has always wanted, her dreams coming true in Hollywood, but he also knows that all he wants is her. He concludes by expressing his love and that he still needs her, even if Hollywood doesn't.

The song touches on themes of longing, sacrifice, and the struggle to balance personal desires with the obligations of love. It's a reminder that in the pursuit of career and dreams, one shouldn't forget the people they love and who love them back unconditionally.
