Listen To The Radio
Don Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I guess as a lover I have a ways to go
When someone wants you they should just say it's so
But you'll understand if you'll take my hand
Then we can dance real slow.
To something on the radio.

Listen to the radio
Listen to the radio.
Let's spend the night together

Baby don't go
They sing it on the radio.
The words I'd say
Don't seem to sound as real

The songs they play
That's how I really feel.
Listen to the radio

Listen to the radio.
Let's spend the night together

Baby don't go
They sing it on the radio.
I try to find a way to explain to you
What's on my mind
And not sound so plain to you
But you'll realize if you'll close your eyes
The feelings my words can't slow.
They're playing on the radio.

Overall Meaning

The song "Listen To The Radio" by Don Williams is about a man who finds it difficult to express his emotions towards his lover. He admits that he lacks the ability to express his feelings in words. Instead, he believes that the songs played on the radio accurately express how he feels. He wants his lover to listen to the radio with him, dance slowly to the music and spend the night together. The singer believes that the music on the radio can express his emotions in ways that he cannot.

The line, "When someone wants you they should just say it's so, but you'll understand if you'll take my hand" suggests that the man may be shy, or he may have had a difficult time expressing his feelings before. He wants his lover to understand that if she takes his hand, they can express their emotions through dance and music. The chorus, "Listen to the radio, Let's spend the night together, Baby don't go, They sing it on the radio" reiterates that the singer wants his lover to stay, listen to music and dance with him to express their love.

In conclusion, the song is about expressing emotions that cannot be put into words. Instead, the singer believes that the music on the radio can express his deepest feelings. His lover may have to read between the lines, but he hopes that she will join him in a night of slow dances to the songs on the radio.

Anyone watching in 2024?

When I was a kid....my mom would play him and I'd peacefully drift off to sleep....his voice still does it to this day. Gone but not forgotten, Mr. Williams....

Same here, along with Dolly Parton & Kenny Rogers. Sometimes they’d put cassettes on the decks & leave me to jam alone on the sofa as they’d go partying. I learned so many of their lyrics from such days.😂🤣. Appreciate it all.

My dad wasn’t a musical person. He hated every music except for Don Williams. He’d listen to the radio with a Don Williams cassette tape. He passed on but whoever I listen to this song and Don Willams I often drift away thinking of childhood memories. Time goes by so fast 😔
