Maybe That
Don Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll love you forever and a day that's what the love songs like to say
In love it seems life is but a dream when we started out it felt that way
But it didn't take us very long to find out the world is not a song
Life gets blue and love does too you learn to forgive and just go on
Maybe that's all it takes just lettin' go of the old mistakes
Holdin' on tight to the love we make maybe that's all it takes
[ piano ]
We've done our share of slamming doors and wondering what we're together for
Yes we've been through a tear or two and for every tear I'll love you more

And maybe that's all it takes...
Maybe that's all it takes...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Don Williams's song Maybe That's All It Takes tell a story about the ups and downs of a long-term relationship. The lyrics suggest that the beginning of love feels like "life is but a dream," but as time goes on, life and love become more complicated. The singer admits that they have had their share of arguments, misunderstandings, and tears, but the love they have for each other only grows stronger with each passing moment.

The refrain of the song suggests that maybe all it takes to make a relationship work is to forgive old mistakes and hold onto the love they make. This simple idea is actually very profound because it speaks to the fact that love and relationships are not always easy, and sometimes, all it takes is patience, forgiveness, and a willingness to work through the tough times.

The overall message of the song is that love is not always easy, but it is worth it. Relationships require work and effort, and sometimes, all it takes is to let go of old mistakes and hold onto the love they have to make it through the difficult times.

I am here again in October 2022. Quite a soothing voice on the way to work. What an artist. If only we could have more. Heaven is at peace.

I agree. This is Don's best ballad ever. If it were released a year earlier in 89 when country radio was still country, it surely would have been a #1 country Billboard single by far.

This beautiful song should have been a number one record! By the time this was released radio wasn't embracing wonderful artists like Don. This is absolutely beautiful!

+justess martin I agree. I thought  this would surely hit #1 for Don after a high debut in June of 1990. It reached #21 on the new Billboard country song chart methodology on 8-25-90, but would hit #10 on the old chart method that same week. His next 2 singles would go #1 on the old chart method, but #2 and #4 on the new chart method in that order.

I love Don's music so much. He has a way to reach deep down inside of you and hit that "spot". Every song, every lyric. True, classic, beautiful. If more people listened to his music, this world would be a better place. Thank you for the music and the memories, Don, you are a class act.
