Some Broken Hearts Never Mend
Don Williams Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Coffee black, cigarettes
Start this day, like all the rest
First thing every morning that I do
Is start missing you

Some broken hearts never mend
Some memories never end
Some tears will never dry
My love for you will never die

Rendezvous in the night
A willing woman to hold me tight
But in the middle of love's embrace
I see your face

Some broken hearts never mend
Some memories never end
Some tears will never dry
My love for you will never die

Some broken hearts never mend
Some memories never end

Some tears will never dry
My love for you will never die

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Don Williams's iconic ballad, "Some Broken Hearts Never Mend," explore the pain and longing of a lover who has lost someone they deeply cared for. Despite trying to move on with their life and seeking out new relationships, their heart remains broken and the memories of the past haunt them. The singer describes their daily routine of starting each day with coffee and cigarettes, but emotionally, they cannot let go of their past love.

The chorus repeats the message that some broken hearts never heal, some memories never fade, and some tears will never dry. The singer acknowledges that they may find comfort in physical intimacy with another person, but even in those moments, they cannot escape the memory of their lost love. The singer's devotion to their past love is so strong that they believe it will never die.

"Some Broken Hearts Never Mend" was a massive commercial success upon its release, reaching No. 1 on the US Hot Country Songs chart and staying on the chart for 20 weeks. It also reached No. 14 on the Hot 100 chart. The song has become a classic in the country music genre and has been covered by numerous artists.

Brooooooo, I'm literally screaming 😭😭😭! This song!

I'm black as black, Nigerian. I remember I was in my early teen trying to download Eminem songs when I MISTAKENLY downloaded this song.

I almost deleted it but just kept listening to it over and over again. Somehow I lost my song and the song but over the years, I never forgotten about this song.

Today after listening to dax to be a remix with Darius Rucker. I checked the man out (Darius) because basically dax introduced him to me. I listened to wagon wheel and got hooked, read the comments and saw how people were praising him for being a "country singer" as a black man.

Man, I decided to search for this song on Google using the keywords "download my love for you will never die" and boom! There it was! 😭😭

Memories! So, if this is country then I feel in love with a country song as a very little boy 🙂... Man, something great is about to happen😊

I don't know how it's even possible, but country music can make me kinda nostalgic for a world I've never been and never seen. It calms down and gives a feeling of infinity of time as if our life is not so short at all. It gives me meaning and desire to keep living through this difficult time

My wife passed just a year ago and it's still hard. How do I get over her. No one ever cared for me like her. She was the sweetest, prettiest girl I ever dated. How could I not love her. I know she wouldn't have left if she didn't have to. Cancer is such a horrible and heartless killer. Miss her everyday. This song says it all.
