The Party's Over
Donegan Lonnie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The party's over, it's time to call it a day
They've burst your pretty balloon
And taken the moon away
It's time to wind up the masquerade
Just make your mind up
The piper must be paid

The party's over, the candles flicker and dim
You danced and dreamed through the night
It seemed to be right just being with him
Now you must wake up, all dreams must end
Take off your makeup, the party's over
It's all over, my friend

The party's over, it's time to call it a day
They've burst your pretty balloon
And taken the moon away
Now you must wake up, all dreams must end
Take off your makeup, the party's over
It's all over, my friend

It's all over, my friend

Overall Meaning

"The Party's Over" by Donegan Lonnie is a song that speaks about the end of a party or a night out, and the inevitable moment when everything must return to reality. When the party ends, the singer acknowledges that a temporary illusion has been shattered, and it is now time to face reality. The lyrics contain several metaphors, such as bursting the pretty balloon, taking away the moon, and winding up the masquerade, all of which represent the end of a fantasy world, and the parties and dreams that people often use as an escape from the real world.

The second paragraph of the song speaks directly to a party attendee who has been swept up in the moment, dancing and dreaming through the night. The singer suggests that it's now time to let go of the dreams and return to reality. The metaphorical makeup worn at the party must also be removed, meaning that it's time to shed the facade and face the truth. The song ends on a poignant note with "It's all over, my friend," which implies a sense of finality and acceptance that the party has ended, and it's time to move on.

I've listened to this and to Matt Monroe's (who was a wonderful signer)and for me this one by Lonnie, for me , is the best, as you say sung with feeling.

I went to a Lonnie Donegal show in Great Yarmouth in the early 1960s it was a typical fast moving seaside summer show Lonnie ended it by sitting amid the footlights with his feet dangling over the orchestra pit and singing The Party’s Over, a great rendition that I will always remember.

I was at that show in 1965 the Tornados were on the same show.

My grandfather used to love this song. He developed Alzheimers, and towards the end he didn't even know us, but one of the few things that used to comfort him was when we'd play this song. Sometimes he couldn't remember the words but other times they'd come to him. He's long gone, but sometimes late at night when if can't sleep I can hear his long ago voice in my ears, which is a strange feeling.....
