Brooklyn
Donna Summer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Brooklyn
Child of freedom still new to this world
Brooklyn
Summer magic my sweet baby sweet girl

All the waiting all the praying
Brought the answer to all of the love we've been saving
All the hoping all the needing
Turned the dream of a vision into a real thing
Mama's happy

Brooklyn
Child of rhythm riding on a moonlit star
Brooklyn
Pretty daughter born with a smile

Daddy felt you 'fore he saw you
Mommy carried you so long
Mimi saw you 'fore she felt you
Four is a family so strong
My baby

Brooklyn
Child of children LA is your home
Brooklyn
Sweetest princess we'll grow as you go

All the waiting all the praying
Brought the answer to all of the love we've been saving
All the hoping all the needing
Turned the dream of a vision into the real thing

Brooklyn
Child of music your song is of love
Brooklyn
Came together and I thank God above

Brooklyn
Child of freedom
Baby your daddy's so proud of you
Brooklyn
Summer magic
Your sister love you too

We're all going to love you yeah
Mommy loves you too

Overall Meaning

The song "Brooklyn" is a celebration of the birth of Donna Summer's daughter Brooklyn Sudano, who was born in 1981. The lyrics pay tribute to Brooklyn's parents and grandparents while also acknowledging the hope and anticipation that surrounded her arrival. The first verse describes Brooklyn as a "child of freedom" who is still new to the world, and the second verse celebrates her as a "child of rhythm" with a bright future ahead. Throughout the song, Summer expresses her love and admiration for Brooklyn and for the family that brought her into the world.

The song's upbeat tempo and infectious melody reflect the joy and optimism that Summer felt after the birth of her daughter. It is notable that the lyrics focus on the joy and hope that surrounded Brooklyn's birth, rather than on the more difficult or challenging aspects of childbirth and parenthood. This is consistent with Summer's generally uplifting and positive musical style, which often celebrated love, joy, and the power of music to bring people together.

I came to this song after pulling up Brooklyn Sudano and her Instagram newsfeed. It sounded awesome! I bought Donna Summer, Ordinary Girl years ago and even though she mentioned that song in her book, it took me a minute to come back to it. Songs like this makes me wish she was still here with us.
