Cry Of A Waking Heart
Donna Summer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I stand before you with my mind open wide
waiting to receive whatever will be
the world the eyes survey is not the only world
for deep within the soul can be found all things

Like the shape of sound, the shape of wind
like the shape of things when they first begin
how could I stop what I had to start
the cry of a waking heart

(Chorus):
All I want is to love you
all I need is to get through
what I believe is a light in the dark
the crying of a waking heart

You shine inside me like the moon in the stream
and the waters flow around me

Like the colour of sun I cannot explain
behind the familiar the view is strange
maybe to love is to fly apart
and this emotion the cry of a waking heart

(Chorus):
(Bridge):
Golden slumber
now and forever
truly rising
imagine heaven
one vibration
this eternal thing

(Chorus x2, out)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics in Donna Summer's song "Cry Of A Waking Heart" is a beautiful ode to the powerful emotions of love and the inner spirit. The opening lines depict the artist's willingness to embrace anything that comes to her, highlighting the importance of having an open mind. She then delves deeper into the idea that there is more to the world than what eyes can see and that one must look inside themselves to find everything they need.

The lines "how could I stop what I had to start, the cry of a waking heart" suggest that the emotions she's feeling are so strong that they cannot be ignored. The chorus is an expression of the artist's love, need, and belief that there is hope in every situation. The comparison of the moon in the stream and the waters flowed around her highlight the idea of being surrounded by love.

The lyrics then delve into the idea that love is a strange emotion, with unexplainable colours and views. The artist questions whether to love is to fly apart, acknowledging the potential risk associated with love, as emotions and people can be unpredictable. The bridge speaks of the idea of an eternal, golden slumber, and one vibration, bringing a sense of peace and settlement to the song.

I'm a huge fan. I love all of her music. But this is one of my most favorite recordings. The "Mistaken Identity" album is outstanding. This just reaches out and touches your core.

Terrance Knox

I've loved this song ever since I bought the cassette in the .99 bin at Musicland. Underrated album...just beautiful

WMW

Yes, this was an amazing, outstanding CD. HIGHlLY underrated. All tracks are comprised of magnificent artistry. Had this album been properly promoted, it would have captivated so many people. This release was categorized as a failure not because of the quality of material but the lack commercial support it received. For those who never experienced listening to this masterpiece have truly missed out.

The late Donna Summer in one word: Amazing.

It happened to me , too. The first time I've heard this song, it is in my heart. Whenever i hear it I feel carefree, I wanna dance and hug somebody. and with her vocal abilities it sounds like she is singing a duet with herself. Simply an singing artist.

Lyndon Woodward

Wow, what a song! The Grammy's missed this one! Donna always had something amazing to share with the public. Stunning arrangement. She even brought out another side of a producer's talent, also.

@J Crash Don't know. There might have been lots of reasons. Some singers and people in general hit rough patches in their careers ; and sometimes have self confidence issues.I would never encourage someone to stop doing something they have a passion for.Sometimes people get stuck creatively.Elton John had three albums in the eighties that didn't go gold.I wouldn't encourage him to give up.People get depressed( stuck at times) ; but passion returns.Would you encourage someone you love to give up or support them and help them find solutions?

J Crash

@Lyndon Woodward yeah? So answer this, why did Donna Summer originally want to retire then?

Lyndon Woodward

@J Crash Artists don't retire.Would you retire from something you enjoy doing? Would you encourage someone you love to retire from doing something they have a passion for ? Don't know why you would be angry at a singer who never did anything to hurt you personally.People who say cruel or insulting things are angry people. You can deny it all You want.

J Crash

@Lyndon Woodward I hear a woman who was way past her peak and should have retired like she originally wanted to after the disco era was over.
