Dinner With Gershwin
Donna Summer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want to have dinner with Gershwin
I want to watch Rembrandt sketch
I want to talk theory with Curie
Impossible I guess

I want to talk moods with Picasso
On a rendezvous
I want to fly double with Earhart
I want to get next to you
Next to you

So close
Just as close as I can get
The rain of your worry
Can't effect
What I feel is what I feel
One touch
Of your greatness
Is what I need
My circle of fantasy
Would be complete

I want to sing hymns with Mahalia
When the day is through
I want to tell you about it
I want to get next to you
Next to you

So close
Just as close as I can get
The rain of your worry
Can't effect
What I feel is what I feel
One touch
Of your greatness
Is what I need
My circle of fantasy
Would be complete

So close
Just as close as I can get
The rain of your worries
Can't effect
What I feel is what I feel
One touch
Of your greatness
Is what I need
My circle of fantasy
Would be complete

I want to have dinner with Gershwin
I want to watch Rembrandt sketch

I want to talk theory with Curie
Impossible I guess

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Donna Summer's "Dinner with Gershwin" express a desire for intellectual and artistic activities, as well as the desire to be close to an unspecified person. The verses each name various historical figures and their respective fields of expertise: George Gershwin (composer), Rembrandt (painter), Marie Curie (physicist and chemist), Pablo Picasso (painter), and Amelia Earhart (aviator). These names reference some of the most important and influential figures in the arts and sciences, and suggest a longing to be in their presence and learn from them. The chorus expresses a desire to be close to the unnamed person, and suggests that being close to them is the ultimate fulfillment. The lyrics conclude with the repetition of the first verse, emphasizing the unattainability of these desires.

I just can't believe this spectacular song is so underrated it deserves to be more noticed.

You're not the only one. One of the album's producers, Harold Faltermeyer, was surprised her label didn't do anything to push a couple of the other songs on the album. I think Geffen was trying to move on from her; they just rushed the album out the door.

She always seemed to do her best work with Harold. Apart from Giorgio Moroder, he was the only producer who really seemed to bring out her best.
