Forgive Me
Donna Summer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Every day I give you a reason to cry
I see the hurt in your eyes
But stronger yet
I see the love that shines

Help me learn to take on the nature of you
And love more than I accuse
And pardon others like you taught me to

'Cause something happens inside my heart
Lord, when I obey
Something happens inside my heart
Every time I pray

Forgive me
As I learn how to forgive
The ones who broke my heart
The way I've broken yours

Forgive me
As I learn how to forgive
And reach out through the pain
And touch with hands of grace

As you prayed for those who crucified you
"Forgive, they don't know what they do"
Compassion reched out to a world confused

Help me learn to bless those who persecute me
And pray for my enemies
And show them mercy like you've shown to me

'Cause something happens inside my heart
Lord, when I obey
Something happens inside my heart
Every time I pray

Forgive me
As I learn how to forgive
The ones who broke my heart
The way I've broken yours

Forgive me
As I learn how to forgive
And reach out through the pain
And touch with hands of grace

Forgive me
As I learn how to forgive
The ones who broke my heart
The way I've broken yours
Forgive me

As I learn how to forgive
And reach out through the pain

And touch with hands of grace
Forgive me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Forgive Me" by Donna Summer is a request for forgiveness from a loved one. The singer is aware that she has hurt her loved one and apologizes for her actions. She acknowledges the pain she has caused and recognizes the hurt in the eyes of her loved one. She is touched by the love that is still shining through the pain.

The singer then talks about her desire to become a better person by taking on the nature of her loved one. She wishes to be more loving and less accusatory. She also wants to be able to forgive others just as her loved one has taught her to. She recognizes that something happens inside her heart every time she obeys and prays.

The singer then connects her own experiences to that of Jesus who prayed for those who crucified him. She asks for help in being able to bless those who persecute her and to show mercy to her enemies just as Jesus has shown her. She recognizes that compassion is needed in a world that is often confused.

The singer ends by repeating her request for forgiveness and for help in learning how to forgive. She wants to reach out through the pain and touch with hands of grace. This song is, therefore, an appeal for forgiveness, compassion, and understanding.

I first heard this song when she released it. Donna was a fantastic singer and this song is on an awesome album, so I bought it. From then to now I continue to listen to this song which has been a blessing and comfort to me over the decades. During tough moments it reminds me to turn my eyes to my awesome Saviour and Lord Jesus! Thank you Donna!❤️

@barrioboi1

Hands down one of my favorites. I saw this this morning and it is my meditation for the day and for my life. Forgive me, Lord and help learn how to forgive those that have persecuted me. Thank you, Donna! Hope to see you in heaven and sing in the choir that accompanies your praises to God our father.

@ericeric4271

One of the most amazing voices of all time!
You got to love her or something is wrong with your ears.
Rest in peace Mrs. Summer.❤️❤️

@jamesrender6701

She was well known, but with that voice, she was still underrated. She has one of the greatest voices in music PERIOD!!!

@Lauragetsalife

What a beautiful performance! I have been feeling lots of anger at work. I have tried many things like meditation, but I remembered this song from long ago and what a treasure hearing Donna’s sincere version. I felt that disgusting feeling of blame and depressing feelings of revenge melt away and be replaced with the saviors love. Thanks for your testimony and RIP in Jesus’s arms!

@montgomerycamjr

I've always loved that song by Donna Summer I TRULY felt her spirit and grace in the way she sung that song. I love you Donna Summer, you will always be missed. The Queen of Disco!!!

@jamesrender6701

I agree. This is my first time hearing this. This is truly a blessing. It's anointed and you can feel that it comes from her heart.
