Highway Runner
Donna Summer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Highway lead him to where he's never been
Show that drifter what he's never seen
Introduce him to this
Acquaint him with that
Gotta keep searching like a stray stray cat

Highway runner chasing time since the day he was born
Highway runner racing time around the world one more time
For one more time

It ain't even me can hold him down
Country just a breath from town to town
He got restless feet and a restless mind
Never want to travel through the same place twice

Highway runner chasing time since the day he was born
Highway runner racing time around the world one more time
For one more time

One more time
One more time

One more time
You're gonna meet your match...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Donna Summer's song Highway Runner portrays a character who is constantly on the move, seeking new experiences and adventures. The highway is a metaphor for his restless spirit, as it leads him to places he has never been and shows him things he has never seen before. The character is open-minded and curious, eager to be introduced to new things and to acquaint himself with unfamiliar places and people.

The chorus emphasizes the character's relentless pursuit of new experiences, as he is a highway runner who is constantly chasing time since the day he was born. He is described as racing time around the world one more time, as though he is trying to cram in as much as he can before his time runs out. The lyrics suggest that he is a wanderer at heart, with restless feet and a restless mind that never wants to travel through the same place twice.

The final line "You're gonna meet your match..." can be interpreted as a warning to the character that his roaming lifestyle may one day catch up with him. He may eventually meet someone who is just as restless and explorative as he is, leading to a love affair that pulls them in opposite directions. Alternatively, the line could be a threat from someone who wants to put an end to the character's wild ways.

Always loved this song! This should have been a single for her. People would have had a different impression of her amazing range if they had released more rock type songs for her like this! Still can’t believe this album was shelved for years! And never promoted or properly produced once it finally came out.
What a shame. Another great song from my favorite singer of all time!! Miss you Donna
