Melanie
Donna Summer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Melanie is sweet
A vision on her feet
So young so fair
A bridge of iron
Standing tall between two parted spheres
She's a novelty of reality
Though she tried so hard
My sweet darling Melanie

She's glad for what she's had
Her mom and several dads so she complained
This modern love affair
With life can really get you down

She's a novelty of reality
But she tried so hard my sweet darling Melanie

Ooh but life goes on
Ooh the same old song
Ooh but love's in search of mystery
So you worked so hard my sweet darling Melanie

Over the horizon
Birds of paradise sit in her eyes
You can feel forever on her sweet and silken sighs

She's novelty of reality
So she tried so hard my sweet darling Melanie
Na, na, na
She's novelty of reality
So she tried so hard my sweet darling Melanie

So she tried so hard my sweet darling Melanie
Na, na, na...

Overall Meaning

In Donna Summer's song Melanie, the lyrics talk about a young girl named Melanie who is described as sweet and a vision on her feet. The lyrics paint a picture of her as a bridge of iron standing tall between two spheres, maybe signifying her position as someone who brings two seemingly opposite worlds together. Melanie is presented as a novelty of reality, implying that she is someone who stands out, who is unique, and special in a world where sameness reigns. These qualities make her special to the singer, who affectionately refers to her as sweet and darling throughout the song.

Despite some of Melanie's complaints about her life, she is happy for what she has, acknowledging that she has a mom and several dads. The lyrics suggest that life can be tough, but love's search for mystery is what keeps people going. The song ends with a picture of Melanie as a bird of paradise, with eyes that make you feel like you can see forever on her sweet and silken sighs.

Overall, the song seems to be an ode to the special qualities that make someone unique in a world that sometimes seems like everyone is the same. The lyrics suggest that the qualities that make Melanie stand out are what make her special to the singer, even if life can be tough sometimes.

Always loved this song

Another amazing song from Donna's sadly shelved 1981 I'm a Rainbow album, that wasn't released until 1996! Melanie should have been released as a single in 1981 and it would have been a big pop/dance hit! Can you imagine how futuristic and cool it would sounded on the radio and in clubs back then? The Euro-synth-disco vibe would have fit in with Visage, Human League, Ultravox, etc. Too bad. But Donna's music lives on...
