Mistaken Identity
Donna Summer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Undercover cop car
Came screeching to a halt
Body lying on the ground
Must be someone's fault
Circumstantial evidence
Seemed to point her way
Her right to remain silent
Was all she heard them say

Blue dress, blue eyes
Blonde hair, about five foot nine
Wrong place, wrong time
Wrong face, wrong crime

(chorus):
Mistaken identity
Could happen to you or to me
Mistaken identity
Mistaken identity
Could happen to you or to me
Mistaken identity
Mistaken identity

(i didn't do it, no, i didn't do it)
No money for a lawyer
To defend her case
Standing in the line-up
Tears rolling down her face

No one cared to listen
Someone had to take the heat
Sometimes there's no justice
When you're a victim of the street

Wrong place, wrong time
Wrong face, wrong crime (x4)

(chorus):
Tu ut tu tu tu...tu ut tut tu tu
They didn't even say
I'm sorry
Tried to put her away
In a hurry

Don't make her pay the price
She's not guilty
(guilty)
For someone else's crime
Set her free
(set her free)

I didn't
I didn't
I didn't do it no (x4)

(chorus out)

I decided to purchase this track after getting the Donna Summer collection back in college. This is a really good RnB track. it does sound a little dated, but it has a great message and reminded me of Janet's Rhythm Nation.

If she wanted to do a New Jack Swing album I think Teddy Riley would've been a good producer at the time for that.

Sometimes we think we are what we are not and for awhile we are convinced of it. But, who we are ?

Mid 1980's she was quoted out of context about gays attracting the wrath of G-d with their lifestyle and the scourge of AIDS, she was the disco queen, ruined her career

@Kent Lewis
All anyone who doesn’t like Donna Summer, probably hasn’t really heard her music. I see so many comments from people on her ballads. They didn’t know that she could sing “like that!”
I’ve been a fan since 78.

BTW Elton John knew better. He campaigned to have her inducted into the RRHOF, stating that she had been a good friend to him & his AIDS foundation.

IMO what hurt her latter career the most was the disco label. No matter what styles of music she conquered, people continued to put her in that box which she had outgrown. Was she the Queen of Disco...yes. Was she more than that...unequivocally yes! Fun fact : her 5 grammys were in 4 different categories. She won 2 in the Inspirational field, 1 in R&B, 1 in Dance, & 1 in Rock (the first female to win this category).
