Carry On
Donna Summer feat. Giorgio Moroder Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

La, la, la, la, la, la

Carry on
Carry on my love
Just don't look back again
Follow the dream that's in you
Say so long
Say so long my love
Just get it right this time
You know it's all up to you
You've wandered down this road so long
But faith keeps telling you to go on, go on

Carry on, carry on
Carry on, carry on

Carry on
Carry on my love
Just don't look back again
Look for the strength that's in you
Say so long
Say so long my love
Trust in your heart again
You know it's all up to you
You've wandered down that road so long
But faith keeps telling you to go on, go on

Carry on, carry on
Carry on, carry on

Carry on
Carry on my love
Just don't look back again
Look for the strength that's in you
Say so long
Say so long my love

Baby, baby don't be afraid
Baby you can make it baby
Baby, baby, baby, baby carry on
You can make it

Baby, baby, baby, baby, baby
Baby, baby, baby carry on

Overall Meaning

The song Carry On by Donna Summer and Giorgio Moroder is an uplifting and motivational track that encourages listeners to persevere and follow their dreams despite any obstacles they may face. The lyrics use both direct statements and metaphorical language to convey this message. The repeated phrase "carry on" serves as a sort of mantra, urging listeners to keep moving forward. The lines "Just don't look back again/Look for the strength that's in you" suggest that dwelling on past mistakes or setbacks is unproductive and that it is more helpful to focus on one's inner resilience.

The use of the phrase "wandered down this road" and the mention of faith hint at a spiritual or religious element in the song's message. The implication is that the journey of life may not always be easy, but by following one's heart and staying true to oneself, one can overcome challenges and find fulfillment. The repetition of "carry on" and the use of the word "baby" give the song a sense of intimacy and comfort, as if the singers are personally reassuring the listener that they are capable of persevering.

I just came across this posted video tonight, and I remember the song very well - I used to play the SH*T out of it I am like how come I haven't heard this before when I did find it in one of my collections. There was a Maxi single released that had about 4 versions of the song if I remember correctly. While its upbeat and danceable I still find myself tearing up when I hear her music. R.I.P. Queen!

@ricseeks

Yep, I have the same experience, with so many of Donna’s songs- This one in particular, all the bittersweet message about carrying on (and I apply it to lots of losses, especially her passing).
