Grace
Donna Taggart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As we gather in the chapel here in old Kilmainham jail.
I think about these past few weeks,
Oh will they say we've failed?
From our school days they have told us we must yearn for liberty.
Yet all i want in this dark place,
Is to have you here with me.

Oh Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger.
They'll take me out at dawn and i will die. With all my love i place this wedding ring upon your finger.
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye.

Now i know it's hard for you my love to ever understand.
The love i shared for these brave men,
The love for my dear land.
But wen glory called me to his side, down in the GPO.
I had to leave my own sick bed,
To him i had to go.

Oh Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger.
They'll take me out at dawn and i will die.
With all my love i place this wedding ring upon your finger.
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye.

Now as the dawn is breaking,
My heart is breaking too.
On this May morn as i walk out,
My thoughts will be of you.
And i'll write some words upon the wall so everyone will know.
I loved so much that i could see his blood upon the rose.

Oh Grace just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger.
They'll take me out at dawn and i will die.

With all my love i place this wedding ring upon your finger.
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye.

Overall Meaning

Donna Taggart's song "Grace" tells a heartbreaking story of a man who is about to be executed at Kilmainham Jail. At the chapel in the jail, he expresses his desire to be with Grace, the love of his life, in his last moments. He reminisces about their love and how he had to leave her to fight for his country. The man knows that he will not have time to share his love with Grace as he will be taken out at dawn to die. In a touching moment, the man places a wedding ring on her finger, symbolizing his love.

The lyrics express the man's sense of duty to his country and the struggle between that duty and his love for Grace. The man believes in fighting for his land, and he is not sure if Grace understands his love for his country. However, he knows that he has to follow his heart and fight for what he believes in, even if it means leaving Grace behind. The song also shows how the man accepts his fate and finds solace in his love for Grace.

The song is based on the true story of Grace Gifford and Joseph Plunkett. Joseph was a leader in the Easter Rising of 1916 and was jailed in Kilmainham Jail. Grace was Joseph's fiancée, and they got married in the jail's chapel hours before Joseph was executed. The song is a touching tribute to their love story and their sacrifice for their country.

Before the centenary, Everything about the 1916 Rising was foreign to me, until I realised that a lot of them had traits like Scottish accents, English descent, British Army son, Born Protestant, Norman descent, son of policeman and many others

The centenary taught me that not all Irish republicans were like the masked men that my family saw in the news

My mother even knows a lot of rebel songs and even sang to them in a pub during a rebel night.

My family even buy me 1916 books, my favourite is my 16Lives Joseph Plunkett book.

I still commemorate WWI aswell, It's been in my family.
