You said you would always stay
It wasn't me who changed, but you
And now you've gone away
Don't you know that now you're gone
And I'm left here on my own
Now I have to follow you
You don't have to say you love me
Just be close at hand
You don't have to stay forever
I will understand
Believe me, believe me
I can't help but love you
But believe me, I'll never tie you down
Left alone with just a memory
Life seems dead and so unreal
All that's left is loneliness
There's nothing left to feel
In Donny Osmond's 1972 hit, Love Me, he sings about a relationship that has fallen apart due to one person's change in feelings. The opening lines, "When I said I needed you, you said you would always stay," suggest that the relationship began with both parties being committed to each other. However, Donny highlights that it was not him who changed but his partner, who has now left him alone. The pain of this abandonment is expressed in the lines, "Don't you know that now you're gone, and I'm left here on my own, now I have to follow you and beg you to come home." He is pleading for his partner to return, revealing that he still has strong feelings for them.
The chorus then comes in, with Donny expressing his understanding of the situation. He doesn't need his partner to say they love him or to stay with him forever. He just wants them to be close at hand and to understand that he loves them but would never want to hold them back. The line, "Believe me, believe me, I can't help but love you," shows how deeply he feels, despite their separation.
The last verse reveals the depth of Donny's despair. He is left alone to deal with nothing but memories, and life seems pointless without his partner. The imagery of "life seems dead and so unreal, all that's left is loneliness, there's nothing left to feel" sums up the desolate feeling of heartbreak.
