The name of the ba… Read Full Bio ↴The Donots formed in 1993 in Ibbenbüren, Germany.
The name of the band came into being by chance: The bassist of the band, Jan-Dirk Poggemann wanted to name the band like the pastries donuts, but he wrote the name the wrong way by mistake. The other band members liked the name, because they found their philosophy in the name (donots = do nothing, like slackers), so they retained the name. Very rarely the band calls themselves "Ibbtown Rockers" because of their provenance.
The US edition of “Wake The Dogs” features 14 new songs from the punk-veterans, plus 2 additional bonus tracks not included in the original German release, and was released on OK! Good Records.

Pick Up The Pieces
Donots Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And have a dance on broken glass
We look a mess
Sedaded in our sunday best
What the hell are we waiting for?
I said what the hell are we waiting for?
All dressed up and nowhere to go
We're all dressed up and we ain't got nowhere to go
What the hell are we waiting for?
Say what the hell are we waiting for?
What the hell are we waiting for?
Pick up the pieces, pick up the pieces
Come one, come all
We got a chance to point the blame
Insert a name
We're only changing for the same
What the hell are we waiting for?
I said what the hell are we waiting for?
All dressed up and nowhere to go
Nothing left to lose or show
We're all dressed up and we ain't got nowhere to go
What the hell are we waiting for?
Say what the hell are we waiting for?
What the hell are we waiting for?
Pick up the pieces
All dressed up and nowhere to go
We're all dressed up and we ain't got nowhere to go
What the hell are we waiting for?
Say what the hell are we waiting for?
Pick up the pieces, pick up the pieces
What the hell are we waiting for?
Say what the hell are we waiting for?
Pick up the pieces, just pick up the pieces
Pick up the pieces, pick up the pieces
The lyrics to Donots’ song Pick Up The Pieces are an energetic call for action and change. The opening lines invite listeners to come dance on broken glass, symbolizing risk-taking and embracing the messy aspects of life. The verses then describe a feeling of being stuck or stagnant, “all dressed up and nowhere to go,” with “nothing left to lose or show.” The repetition of “what the hell are we waiting for?” heightens the urgency and frustration felt by the singer.
The chorus then repeats the call to action, urging listeners to “pick up the pieces” and make a change. The bridge suggests that blaming others or just going through the motions won’t lead to meaningful change, but rather that change requires active effort and personal accountability. The final repetition of “pick up the pieces” serves as a rallying cry to take action and make the most of the present moment.
Overall, this song is a powerful reminder to seize opportunities, take risks, and make the most of the time we have. It encourages listeners to break out of a sense of complacency and embrace the messiness of life, rather than waiting for things to fall into place.
