Donovan was good friends with The Beatles and they were both making very innovative and trippy music at the time.
Donovan's producer Mickie Most told him not to play this to Paul McCartney under any circumstances, because he knew McCartney would be tempted to do something similar.

Immediately, The Greg Kihn Band’s one-hit wonder started going in my head. But you’re absolutely right.

I’m a baby. I’m just barely a millennial. But I grew up listening to artists like The Kinks, The Beatles, Van Morrison, Joe Jackson, Donovan, The Rolling Stones, Duke Ellington, among others. Even though I was born in the late 90s, I’m a 60s, 70s, and 80s kid (at least when it comes to movies, tv shows, and music). I favor the 80s, mostly, but I love the 60s and 70s stuff a lot too.

I just wish that they sped it up a little bit even just once, if only in a concert. It’s already a fantastic song, but if they were able to increase the tempo from 120 BPM, which is faster than the average of 114 BPM for 60s rock to 180 BPM, which is typical of quite a few songs from the 80s and 90s.

I’d speed it up by 1.5x using YouTube playback, but then their voices start to sound like chipmunks, and that’s not appealing. I’ll just have to learn it on my guitar and play it a bit faster than they do.

Not to mention he also mentioned Green Lantern. I was born in 86, but love music from the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. Feel like i was definitely born in the wrong time. Even to be born in the 60s wouldve been great couldve. There are some decent bands out today, but Zeppelin, The Doors, Queen, The Who, Jefferson Airplane. Just can't come close to those bands.

I remember my whole family sitting around the TV watching the fucking draft lottery and my brother's birthday came up way too soon. He was mentally preparing to go but then they discontinued the draft or something. People forget there was a really FUCKED UP war going on when all this fantastic music was happening. It was all so overwhelming and wonderful but mostly terrifying when I thought my brother was going to die. Every night at dinner there were fights between my brother and my WWII veteran dad ("my country, right or wrong," lifelong Democrat). And my poor mother saying, "more potatoes, anyone?" Serious discussions of fleeing to Canada and my dad saying he would disown him. My boyfriend became a conscientious objector. No wonder people dropped acid.

I know I'm commenting two years after you posted that, but never mind the jerks.

I still remember first impressions of some music from when I was even younger than that -- two pieces by Chopin, in particular. I have the sense that these pure musical impressions came from a time before I even learned language.

Some songs are of that unique quality that sticks, and even from when you were as young as 3 the song can still take you back. This is definitely one of them, though I first heard it when it first came out and I was a teenager. I call them memory magnets. They "get ya"... y'know what I mean? They go straight to your brain's "hard drive" and stay there for the rest of your life, along with your sensations of that particular moment. I believe the oldest memories many people have are of music. Another of Donovan's songs that has that quality is "Mellow Yellow."

So, yes, I absolutely do believe you and understand what you're talking about, because I've experienced it myself. Sad that some of these other commenters can't relate to it. BTW, I'm 71.

I can't recall Superman and Green Lantern being referenced in many other rock songs from around this era, which is cool considering is by a famous artist when most people just saw comics as kids stuff back then (at least from what I've heard, could be wrong)

While Donovan’s music is still great to this day, many comments suggest Donovan himself is “the most under rated musician ever” and similar statements. But the truth to the matter is that these other legends of musical talent were playing for Donovan, and it’s their incredible talent that makes this music so special. And yes, Donovan’s voice fit the music very well also.
But when a singer has Jimmy Page writing and playing the guitar parts, and John Bonham on drums laying down a perfect rhythm AND John Paul Jones laying a bass groove perfectly tight with the drummer, how could anything go wrong? These guys would of course later call in Robert Plant and become Led Zeppelin.
One of the most successful, famous groups of all time.
And that’s why we can’t contribute all of the success of Donovan to the one man singing! It’s a team effort, and it involves the best team in the business.
