Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

All Alone
Doris Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There is no one else but you
All alone by the telephone
Waiting for a ring, a ting-a-ling
I'm all alone every evening
All alone, feeling blue
Wondering where you are and how you are
I wonder where you are (remember me)
and how you are (remember me)
And if you are (I love you) all
alone (I love you) too
The lyrics to Doris Day's song "All Alone" convey the emotions of loneliness and longing for a loved one. The person singing the song is alone and waiting by the telephone for a call from their lover. They spend every evening alone and feeling blue, wondering about their lover's whereabouts and if they are feeling the same loneliness. The repetition of "all alone" emphasizes the feeling of being isolated and wanting company. The lyrics also contain a plea for their lover to remember them and express their love, revealing the deep emotions and vulnerability of the singer.
One interesting fact about this song is that it was written by Irving Berlin, one of the most prolific and successful songwriters of the 20th century. It was originally written for the 1924 Broadway musical "The Little Show" and was later recorded by several artists, including Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra. Another interesting fact is that the song was featured in the 1953 film "Calamity Jane," in which Doris Day starred.
Despite its popularity, "All Alone" has been considered by some to be a lesser-known song in Doris Day's extensive discography. However, it remains a poignant and beautiful love song that captures the emotions of being apart from a loved one. The chords for the song are Dm7, G7, C, A7, Dm, Bb, E7, A7.
Overall, "All Alone" is a touching and emotional song that showcases Doris Day's vocal range and ability to convey deep feelings through her music. Its enduring popularity and continued use in films and television demonstrate its status as a classic love song.

All alone, I'm so all alone
I am completely by myself with no one to talk to or be with
There is no one else but you
You are the only one in my heart and on my mind
All alone by the telephone
Just waiting for you to call me and bring some happiness to my lonely world
Waiting for a ring, a ting-a-ling
I am eager to hear the sound of the phone ringing and it's you on the other end
I'm all alone every evening
My nights are empty, and I spend them all alone
All alone, feeling blue
I am sad, defeated and melancholy without you by my side
Wondering where you are and how you are
I'm concerned about your whereabouts and your state of mind
And if you are all alone too
I hope that you might be lonely too, and that we can share that feeling together
I wonder where you are (remember me)
Please think of me wherever you are, and keep our love close to your heart
and how you are (remember me)
Remember that I love you and always want you to be happy

Just like a melody that lingers on
You seem to haunt me night and day
I never realized till you had gone
How much I cared about you
I can't live without you
[Refrain:]
All alone
I'm so all alone
There is no one else but you
All alone
By the telephone
Waiting for a ring
A ting-a-ling
I'm all alone every evening
All alone feeling blue
Wondering where you are
And how you are
And if you are
All alone too
[2nd verse:]
Just for a moment you were mine, and then
You seemed to vanish like a dream
I long to hold you in my arms again
My life is very lonely
For I want you only

An early Irving Berlin song written in 1924. Lovely words and after the loss of my wife I know exactly where his mind was.
