Day's film career began during the latter part of the Classical Hollywood Film era with the 1948 film Romance on the High Seas, and its success sparked her twenty-year career as a motion picture actress. She starred in a series of successful films, including musicals, comedies, and dramas. She played the title role in Calamity Jane (1953), and starred in Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) with James Stewart. Her most successful films were the bedroom comedies she made co-starring Rock Hudson and James Garner, such as Pillow Talk (1959) and Move Over, Darling (1963), respectively. She also co-starred in films with such leading men as Clark Gable, Cary Grant, David Niven, and Rod Taylor. After her final film in 1968, she went on to star in the CBS sitcom The Doris Day Show (1968–1973).
Day was usually one of the top ten singers between 1951 and 1966. As an actress, she became the biggest female film star in the early 1960s, and ranked sixth among the box office performers by 2012. In 2011, she released her 29th studio album, My Heart, which became a UK Top 10 album featuring new material. Among her awards, Day has received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a Legend Award from the Society of Singers. In 1960, she was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress, and in 1989 was given the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement in motion pictures. In 2004, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush followed in 2011 by the Los Angeles Film Critics Association's Career Achievement Award. She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.
Her death was announced by her charity, the Doris Day Animal Foundation, on Monday 13th May 2019.

Doin' What Comes Natur'lly
Doris Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
They ain't had any learning
Still they're happy as can be
Doin' what comes naturally
(Doin' what comes naturally)
Folks like us could never fuss
With schools and books and learning
Doin' what comes naturally
(Doin' what comes naturally)
You don't have to know how to read or write
When you're out with a feller in the pale moonlight
You don't have to look in a book to find
What he thinks of the moon and what is on his mind
That comes naturally
(That comes naturally)
My uncle don't pay taxes
His address never gives
They can't collect his taxes
For they don't know where he lives
Cousin Ben got angry
When they caught him stealing chickens
I'm within my rights said
He doing what comes naturally
(Doing what comes naturally)
Uncle Jed has never read an almanac on drinking
Still he's always on a spree doing what comes naturally
(Doing what comes naturally)
Sister Sal who's musical has never had a lesson
Still she's learned to sing off key doing what comes naturally
(Doing what comes naturally)
You don't have to go to a private school
Not to turn up your bustle to a stubborn mule
You don't have to come from a great big town
Not to clean at a stable in an evening gown
That comes naturally
(That comes naturally)
My uncle out in Texas can't even write his name
He signs his checks with x's
But they cash them just the same
Grandpa Dick was always sick but never saw a doctor
He just died at ninety three doing what comes naturally
(Doing what comes naturally)
The song "Doin' What Comes Natur'lly" is a joyful tune that celebrates the simple, carefree lifestyle of people who live in the rural areas. The lyrics suggest that while people in the cities may value education and high society, the country folks are content with doing what they know best - living off the land and enjoying life's simple pleasures. The opening lines, "Folks are dumb where I come from / They ain't had any learning / Still they're happy as can be / Doin' what comes naturally" sets the tone for the rest of the song.
The lyrics highlight the luxuries of not having to know how to read or write, not having to go to school, and not having to follow societal norms to live a happy life. The song even suggests that there is no need for private school or fancy dresses to gain respect from stubborn mules or clean a stable. The line "You don't have to look in a book to find / What he thinks of the moon and what is on his mind / That comes naturally" suggests the natural intuition and understanding of people who live close to nature.
The song also includes comical anecdotes about some of the rural characters such as Uncle Jed who never reads an almanac on drinking or Cousin Ben who feels like he has the right to steal chickens. What makes the song entertaining is the juxtaposition of these stories against the cheerful melody and vibrant instrumentation. Overall, the song paints a picture of a simple but happy lifestyle that values authenticity and natural joy.
