IMAGINATION
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Imagination is funny
It makes the cloudy day sunny
Makes the bee think of honey
Just as I think of you

Imagination is crazy
Your whole perspective gets hazy
Starts you asking a daisy
What to do, what to do

Have you ever felt the gentle touch
And then a kiss, and then, and then
Find it's only your imagination again
Oh, well

Imagination is silly
You go around willy-nilly
For example, I go around wanting you
And yet I can't imagine that you want me too

Imagination is silly
You go around willy-nilly

For example, I go around wanting you
And yet I can't imagine that you want me too

Overall Meaning

In Doris Day's song Imagination, the singer talks about the power and the whimsy of the human imagination. She explains that it can turn a cloudy day sunny, make someone think of honey when they see a bee, and, in her case, make her think of the one she loves. The song explores how imagination can warp a person's perspective and make them see things in a new way. She even pokes fun at herself, admitting that sometimes she gets lost in her own imagination, going "willy-nilly" as she daydreams about the one she loves.

The song's chorus repeats the same line twice: "Imagination is silly, you go around willy-nilly." It's a playful and lighthearted twist on the traditional love song, where the focus is usually on winning someone's affection or expressing how much you care. Instead, Day takes a step back and acknowledges the absurdity of it all, admitting that despite her wild imaginings, she can't even imagine that the person she loves would want her back. In a way, the song is a celebration of the beauty of imagination, even if it's sometimes ridiculous or unfounded.

Listen to these lyrics! Brilliant!! Think about it the song hits it out of the park!! Not to mention Doris Day's version of the tune. Of a bit different than Frank's but that just makes the tune even better to listen to!! Furthermore I believe that lyrics are very important to a song. How could anyone in their right way of heart think that. the genre's. "Rap" or. Hip Hop. could even shine a candle next to the lyrics of the great older classic music ever made???

The delivery of this song is unusual. This is still in the early part of her singing career, yet she had been singing for several years, and was at least 25 years old at this recording, yet she sounds younger. Her singing is breathy, as though whispering or drowsy, and it sounds like she is singing very close to the mike. She often sings love songs with a sweet tone, but here the tone is at times drained of color. Perhaps she is portraying a teenage girl daydreaming in the privacy of her bedroom about a secret infatuation that is unknown or unreturned, and pining away without hope. If that is so, she is successful, and it would fit the lyrics. I wonder if at that time her records were appealing to teenage girls.
