Just Imagine
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Just imagine
That he loves me dearly.
Just imagine
That I'm here sincerely.
I'm pretending
That he's sending
Love note ending
"I love you!"

Seems that he's there
As the day is closing;
On his knees there,
I hear him proposing!
He's not present,
Still it's pleasant,
Just imagine that it's true.

Seems that he's there
As the day is closing;
On his knees there,
I hear him proposing!
Till I win you,

I'll continue
To imagine that it's true.

Overall Meaning

In the song "Just Imagine," Doris Day sings about the power of imagination, and how it can make us believe in impossible things. In the opening lines, she sings, "Just imagine that he loves me dearly. Just imagine that I'm here sincerely." These lines express the idea that sometimes we can imagine things so vividly that we start to believe they are true, even if they aren't. This is a common theme in Day's music, which often deals with the dreams and aspirations of young women.

Trombonology Erstwhile

One of my all-time favorite Doris recordings! All of her brilliance as a vocalist is on glorious display in this treatment of a song that also just happens to be one of my favorites. Her tone is beautiful and she applies just the right amount of restraint, understanding that this, paradoxically, creates a more intimate sound. A stellar performance.
