Little Girl Blue
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The party really swung that night
But I didn't know a soul
And them someone said let's have fun
Bring out that limbo pole

They pushed right by me onto the floor
And I felt so left out
Till I felt someone take my hand
And heard that someone shout

Let the little girl limbo
Let the little girl limbo
Let the little girl limbo
Oh, you know she can go so low

And as they all let me through
He said you know what to do
Little girl you can limbo
I believe in you

First I limbo'd high
(Too high, you gotta go lower)
Then I began to try
(Nice try, but you gotta go lower)
Then I went so low
(So low, no one ever went lower)
(Oh, that girl can go)
Watch me now

I go to lots of parties now
And I always feel so proud
'Cause he's with me and I can see
Now I'm in with the crowd

And when that limbo music begins
We both smile with delight
'Cause ev'rybody begins to shout
The way he did that night

Let the little girl limbo
Let the little girl limbo
Let the little girl limbo
Oh, you know she can go so low

And as they all let me through
He said you know what to do
Little girl you can limbo
I believe in you

First I limbo'd high
(Too high, you gotta go lower)
Then I began to try
(Nice try, but we know you go lower)
Then I went so low
(So low, no one ever gone lower)

(Oh, that girl can go)
Watch me now

Overall Meaning

The song "Let the Little Girl Limbo" by Doris Day tells a story about a young woman who attends a party where she doesn't know anyone. The party is going well, but she feels left out until someone suggests doing the limbo dance. She is hesitant at first, but someone takes her by the hand and encourages her to try. She begins to get the hang of it, and by the end of the song, she is an expert at the limbo and is proud to be a part of the crowd.

The lyrics of the song have a deeper meaning than just a story about a dance. They highlight the importance of inclusivity and encouragement. The young woman in the song feels like an outsider until someone takes the time to help her participate. This message can be applied to larger social issues like racism or ableism, where people may feel left out of society because of their differences. By encouraging others and making them feel included, we can create a more welcoming and accepting community.

One of Doris Day's best adult moments on screen. All of her film scenes were lovely, but they mostly evoked eternal youth, innocence, optimism. Here, in one of the final MGM musicals, she gives a tender and sophisticated reading of the always sophisticated Rodgers and Hart. At first we fear the entire song will be in voice-over (the modern musical films' best friend- because, apparently, singing on-camera is harder to explain than multiple incarnations of Spider-Man), but then mercifully, the vocal begins anew at 1:56 with Day singing on-camera and also acting a myriad of emotions, until teary-eyed in a wistful exit. Absolute Bravo.

mca1218 also watch her in Love Me or Leave Me, w/Jimmy Cagney!! Hard to watch because she had such a rough time of it in real life with bad husbands. But she does amazing in dramas.
