Pretty Baby
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You ask me why I'm always teasing you,
You hate to have me call you Pretty Baby;
I really thought that I was pleasing you,
For you're just a baby to me.
Your cunning little dimples and your baby stare,
Your baby talk and baby walk and curly hair;
Your baby smile makes life worth while,
You're just as sweet as you can be.

Your mother says you were the cutest kid;
No wonder, dearie, that I'm wild about you,
And all the cunning things you said and did.
Why, I love to fondly recall,
Ann just like Peter Pan, it seems you'll always be
The same sweet, cunning, Little Baby dear to me.
And that is why I'm sure that I will always love you best of all.

Everybody loves a baby that's why I'm in love with you,
Pretty Baby, Pretty Baby;
And I'd to be your sister, brother, dad and mother too,
Pretty Baby, Pretty Baby.
Won't you come and let me rock you in my cradle of love,
And we'll cuddle all the time.

Oh! I want a Lovin' Baby and it might as well be you,
Pretty Baby of mine.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Doris Day's song "Pretty Baby" convey a sense of playful teasing and affection towards a significant other. The singer addresses their partner, who they call "Pretty Baby," and asks why they are always teasing them. The singer thought that calling their partner by that nickname was pleasing, but it turns out that their partner dislikes it. Despite this, the singer continues to express their love for their partner, whom they see as a "baby" with "cunning little dimples" and a "baby smile."

The second verse of the song reinforces the concept of the singer's partner being a "baby." The singer talks about how their mother described them as the "cutest kid" and reminisces on the "cunning things" their partner did and said. The comparison to Peter Pan suggests that the singer sees their partner as eternal and ageless, and they will always be "Little Baby dear" to the singer. The song ends with the refrain "Everybody loves a baby," and the singer expressing the desire to be their partner's everything - sister, brother, dad, mother - and have them be their "lovin' baby."

Overall, the lyrics of "Pretty Baby" convey a loving and playful sentiment towards a partner. The use of the nickname "Pretty Baby" and the repeated references to their partner being a "baby" reinforce a sense of affection that is childlike and pure.

So lovely, tender & gentle. Like a loving lullaby.
I never tire of her voice. 💗

Trombonology Erstwhile

Similarly to Sinatra, Doris embarked upon her solo career with the apparent intention of counterbalancing the new tunes that she was called upon by Columbia to popularize with the old standards, which were usually far superior. Dating to at least 1912, "Pretty Baby" would have been familiar fare for listeners in '48. Doris, by that time already a superb interpreter, managed to be both respectful to the innocent playfulness of the song in raw form and invest it with a, shall we say, "after-hours" quality that is most effective. Interestingly, three years later Doris would appear in WB's I'll See You In My Dreams , a biopic (light on the bio) of Gus Kahn, playing the part of Gus' wife, Grace -- and being serenading with this tune by Danny Thomas as Gus.

Great voice

I haven't heard this version by Doris. It's sad they slowed the melody down. I think Kay Starr had a version that was quite bouncy. It would have sounded great in eight or four bar as a boogie woogie tune. Doris does it well of course.
