I'll Be Around
Doris Day with Alex Stordahl and His Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'll be seeing you in all the old familiar places
That this heart of mine embraces all day through
In that small café, the park across the way
The children's carousel, the chestnut trees, the wishing well

I'll be seeing you in every lovely summer's day
In everything that's light and gay
I'll always think of you that way

I'll find you in the mornin' sun
And when the night is new
I'll be looking at the moon
But I'll be seeing you

I'll find you in the mornin' sun
And when the night is new

I'll be looking at the moon
But I'll be seeing you

Overall Meaning

These lyrics are about someone who cannot stop thinking about a loved one who is no longer present. The singer lists various familiar places where they used to spend time together, such as a small café, a park, and a children's carousel. Even though the loved one is not physically there with them, the singer feels their presence all around them. They see the loved one in the beauty of summer days and in everything that is lighthearted and cheerful. They cannot help but think of the loved one constantly and they will always remember them in this way.

The singer then goes on to say that they will find the loved one in the morning sun and when the night is new, which suggests that they are searching for the loved one in everything they see around them. Even when they look up at the moon, they will still be thinking of the loved one. The lyrics convey a sense of deep longing for someone who has been lost, and a determination to hold onto their memory for as long as possible.

I read Tom Santopietro's - Considering Doris Day. He really reviews her whole career. Very interesting book. He puts forth a theory that Doris made everything appear very easy and natural and therefore she didn't really get the credit she so richly deserves .. because it wasn't easy ! I became a Doris fan at 10 when I started listening to my Mom's Doris Day records and I've been a fan ever since !!
